The test your are doing Sir is called Dry Magnetic Particle Testing not Magnaflux Test. The main disadvantage of doing dry MT is that it is less sensitive to locate small defects e.g. a fine crack, small hole etc... Dry is the wrong type for the defects you are trying to find. If that crack wasn't as opened as it was you will miss it. For something like this I would go with Wet Fluorescent MT.

i've got a crack in a head that was hit with a piston.. small crack i noticed after a test run machining head ,,i acquired an old style magnet the one in the yellow tool box.. the magnet wont show crack but i did a penetrant test and it shows up,,crack can be seen by eye, that how i knew it was there ,,thought i would try out this used equip i bought,, do the cracks gotta b a certain size ? the magnet seems to b strong enough i can almost lift head with it,,i am using silver seal 10021 yellow powder, ive tried a light dusting and a heavier dusting, but no clear showing

another video that ends up like a bad reality TV show because this "creator" (like so many others ) made the decision to pretend to be an actor and focus on their face.

Regarding cleaning, is steel shot blasting or media blasting acceptable for iron/steel parts? Or might these methods peen the metal and mask the crack, kind of like wire wheeling is a no-no for aluminum crack testing?

steel shot never. Media blasting is done a lot with minimal issues. The main thing is to use as light of pressure as possible. Correct NEVER use wire wheel in aluminum

Will a DC magnet work? Was thinking of getting some steel or iron rod bending it in a horseshoe shape and wrapping the top with a coil of magnetic wire and then connecting to a 12vdc power supply.

@@georgedesiderio848 Yes, you can use DC magnification. You can purchase DC yokes. You can also use two permanent magnets. They also sell permanent magnet yokes. The only disadvantage is is now very difficult to demagnatize the part. Not recommended if doing engine parts.

Excellent video! Very well explained. Just wondering, what's the best method of detecting cracks in aluminium parts like cylinder heads? I presume dye penetrant? Thanks 👍

You are correct. Magnetic Particle (Magnaflux) won't work because Aluminum is not magnetic. Thanks for kind words.
