I own a 2K Oppo 103 that works great as a SACD/DVD-Audio playback device, and 2K content off it still looks great. All my audio decoding is done through HDMI out, so never needed the 205. I can also buy a very capable 4K UHD disc player for $600 CAD. This new do-it-all player costs $2,000 CAD in Canada, plus tax. So for existing Oppo owners, I can't see anyone buying this.. just get an additional 4K player for the video. I guess if I had money to burn and wanted a single solution, this would make sense. Maybe when Magnetar lowers their player to $1,500 CAD will it be a viable option.

Wow this is the closest yet to the Oppo. Right down to the menu and even font is exactly the same! Too bad no one's figured out the best feature of the oppo...THE FREAKING HDMI INPUTS. For someone like me who has an all analog system that is an absolute godsend. Plus this has no analog audio outs like the 205 does. Very impressive it plays ISO files without the simple hack you have to do on the Oppo now... and is definitely the best bet in a post-Oppo world. Keep in mind, you can find the similarly equipped 203 for a lot less than the 205 and probably even than this... and it's still a potent choice. No mention of the all-inportant DAC they use? I would suggest getting this now before some moron on Amazon blabs about its ISO ability and they kill it like they did with Oppo. I'm sure those who own an Oppo feel the same as me. Seeing what looks like an updated Oppo setup screen just makes me very sad they got out of the business because they were the Masters at it.

I have a Panny UB9000 and my trusty old Oppo-203. The UB9000 is a terrific disc spinner but has some real shortcomings when it comes to playing various combinations of video files (can't play back E-AC3 or lossless audio encodes for example) while the Oppo-203 is still a solid disc UHD disc player that can handle almost any combination of video/audio encoded files that you can throw at. It also has a very good zoom function which is active on any discs or files, something that the Magnetar doesn't appear to have. $1600 plus an additional $99 for ISO playback seems awfully steep. I was lucky enough to get the Oppo at its $500 price before the company pulled the plug on making disc players. While, over the past few years, it had some HDMI handshake issues when passing Dolby Vision discs to Denon AVRs (X3700 and a test with a friend's X4700) and my LG OLED C7 TV, much of that has improved with the latest generation of Denons, in my case the X3800. The HDMI handshaking when playing DV is now more consistent with far fewer signal drops.

Well, good luck to you - many find that Panasonic UB9000 to be quite glitchy - mine had to go in for service after only 7 months. I’m hedging my bets by having the Panasonic and the Oppo 203 And the Magnetar 800 😊

Thank you for the thorough review, Shane. Looks like a great product but I’m sure a lot of folks will be wary of an uncommon brand. Still loving my Panasonic UB820. 🧑🏼🚀

Brand aside, it's also like 4 times as expensive as the Panasonic UB820, the 4K blu-ray player that's universally considered to the be best value for the money. And when it comes to watching 4K blu-rays... the upscaling tech and HDR improvement tech are still better on the Panasonic UB820. So... if it's just a 4K blu-ray player you want, this isn't the device for you. And even the UB820 might be overkill. Most movies have Dolby Vision and the HDR improvement stuff only works for regular HDR, so you'd be just as good with the UB420 or the Sony equivalent for most movies.

So this Magnetar seems to be a more refined and improved OPPO UDP-205 clone with a better GUI than the Reavon model you reviewed several months ago. I Wish it had been available on the market 6 months ago when I had to buy a new UHD BR player then. But both this Magnetar and the Reavon cost more than ANY of the Oppos ever did! So i kind of resent the price they expect us to pay to get their OPPO version, especially with the newly announced downloadable extra feature option. That Should be a free firmware update.

@@gijsbulthuis4656 I doubt they will bother fixing the interface. The player was dirt cheap and works well so doubt they care. I guess they still make new ones but with everything going digital and streaming who knows how much longer. I do have both sacd and DVD audio here so needed a universal player and when I got a TV that supported Dolby Vision I upgraded to the M2 and gave my original X800 to a buddy that got a Samsung 4k TV. HDR 10 plus isn't on my radar as like said my Sony Z9K doesn't support it but it supports the other formats and who knows if they can or will add it later.
