Curious if this little idea took off amongst woodworkers? My husband Ben invented it. He died in 2016. He was pretty proud of it. I still have the one you sent him in its box somewhere which I’ll give to our son when he’s older.

hello l just want to say that guide will only work if your stone is level in both directions also you are very prone to rocking the chisle because you are holding it too far back from the edge no control or feel of the tool probably better to just make a wooden wedge at 30 degrees and put it underneth to get the angle then practice holding your arms and blade ridgid and move your body back and forth rob cosman make one with magnets to do the same thing but its a good idear if the stone in on a known flat bench hope this helps

This would be great for practising honing without a guide! Guides are great when changing an angle or restoring old tools but maintaining a sharp edge is faster freehand

One caveat not mentioned - Chisel is square (to the stone) only when the stone is leveled (perpendicular to gravity).

I think most benches are level to stop chisels from rolling off

As long as you sharpen in the same way each time then things will be consistent and small slopes won't be noticeable. If the slope on your bench is pronounced then levelling it up would be a good idea for lots of reasons.

I wish I'd seen this before I spent over £100 on the Veritas honing system, which is good, but this would have better helped me better towards learning free-hand sharpening.
