I definitely agree with what you’re saying about right to repair but I don’t think this poses any real threat to that. It’s kind of a PITA to get all of the countersinks on a piece of affordable self-assembly furniture (it would never be justifiable for a company to do this with something like flat-pack furniture). Also if you’re putting it together yourself you’d need the tool in the first place. If the furniture/product was pre-assembled they would use glue or time-tested wood joinery techniques. I’m a woodworker and I cannot think of any reason I’d use something like this aside from testing a prototype with different pieces.

@@sawhorse48I've used them before and honestly had several minor issues. They tend to strip out if you drive them too far and since there's no tool contact you can't tell when that is until the pieces no longer hold tight. They are seemingly zinc plated or galvanized so they will hold up to the elements however thats overshadowed by their issue of installment. Tough to reach places are impossible given the size of the tool and the limits of how far the magnets will reach. Joining panels seems to be an ok application for them but again I think dowels are simply just... better. One more thing the thread on the out of the insert is not very deep and that also has a tendency to strip out allowing the whole system to be pulled out of the holes.

Tiny bit of rust and you're never getting that sucker off ever again but at the same time you have to worry about vibrations because if they're loose enough to be turned by a magnet they're loose enough to wiggle and eventually come out from vibrations just like a loose lug nut on your tires... Gotta be precision machined with high tolerances so its gonna be expensive and how often do you really have to take furniture apart? If you want seamless you just go old school with wood glue and dowels, like what scenario would you even need these in when there's better options with the same looking end result?? Only thing this would be half useful for is a hidden drawer...

@azerosblank5036

That's pretty interesting. Wouldn't use it for shelvings or anything for heavy loads though. You can't really tell if your screws are properly screwed in. Unless the receiving plug is measured to specific lengths, as well as the screw is of a greater length on the attached end (to ensure the screws go in all the way at the receiving end where it caps and can't go any further, but still have enough length in the attached end to hold the items securely). Still, you'd have no way of knowing either way.
@azerosblank5036

It really depends on what you intend to place on the shelves, or rack though. I've seen people use proper hidden/concealed brackets to hold racks for televisions. Also, some folks might use them as bookshelves (and books can get pretty hefty). These bolts/screws may or may not cater to them all too well.

For the people worried about the load bearing qualities. Measure what weight you want, add 20%. Load it. If it holds remove the added 20%. You're more than likely just fine. @@OutsiderLabs If they made the screw out of laminated steel slices then dipped it in copper they could develop the torque of a motor since the magnetic field would rotate unevenly around the screw. For those wondering: This would, much like my comment earlier suggests, then create a difference in voltage in the metal laminations (since varying magnetic field strength gives you varying voltage). The difference in voltage giving you current and a subsequent magnetic field (any current traveling through a conductor) which could lock onto the field from the drill and that would give you motor action. Still low torque applications but it'd be a helluva lot tighter than that.
