I don’t know if you will read my comment Justin. But I really hope you do. I’m a vegetarian here in the Uk. I live near a meat factory where cattle are brought to be slaughtered and butchered. The horrendous noises they make as they are brought off the giant trucks is absolutely heart breaking. BUT to see the love, respect and care that you just showed to your bull during the slaughter process is utterly humbling. I have the utmost respect for you and your methods.

Harvesting is such a difficult but necessary part of homestead stewardship. Showing gratitude and shedding a few tears means they have lived their best life while they were with you. This is the part of farming/homesteading where it just plain stinks. My heart goes to you and your family. You did the right thing. Take care.

Hi I fully understand how you feel about losing a cow close to your heart. I had to kill my female cow that has been with us for over 10 years and to say you not emotional doesn't describe the inner pain. But because we know she went for a good cause she served a great purpose for my family. It hurts I know but I'm always grateful for the memories we shared with her and her legacy lives on through her cow and bulls. Love you Aunty

I appreciate the reverence for the animal. I have been a duck hunter for 25 years. I feel a mix of excitement, sadness, appreciation, awe, and more every time I take an animal. I think that is the way it should be. If there comes a day I don’t have those emotions, then I know it is time for me to stop and take a break from it.

I don't think it means that tender-heartedness goes away, but I think with time and wisdom you grow a thin shell over that tender-heart to help you through tougher moments like this. It is hard to take a life that you've cared for and have dedicated so much time and effort to. But, that animal has a greater purpose that God has ordained for it. It is the Biblical way; man has dominion over all animal and plant life, and we should always treat them with respect due. God Bless!

I appreciate Justin's emotions , his love for his animals, and his desire not to cause them undue pain. He wasn't just being cold-hearted, harvesting that bull without any concern. That makes it easier for me to watch, although I wouldn't want to watch the whole process. They are much closer to nature than I will ever be, so I appreciate that they can do what is necessary and be loving and kind in the process.

I’m watching. My heart is heavy. I’m reading the comments and I really want to be able to express how deeply this process affects me. All I know I that I can’t imagine having to kill an animal and then eat it. I wasn’t raised in that environment, so I guess I’m a hypocrite for buying meat at the grocery store. If I ever had to make this decision, I can confidently say that I would be a vegetarian. No judgement. I have a lot of respect for what you are teaching your children. I remember when I was going up in the 60's my Dad had a couple of Highland cows-----meanest cows EVER!... and they had to be shot in the field because they wouldn't load on the trailer to take to be butcher. Back then and in TN they had to have a Vet come out to witness the live animal being killed so they knew it was alive and not road kill. We had named them Charlie and Moe and when we had burgers Dad would always say we were having Charlie burgers. I was a tender hearted girl back then but as you age you realize what has to be done to survive. Good job Justin and family. LOVE watching your journey and if we were not long in the tooth we might try to do more. Our children want nothing to do with the land...we have 17 acres just over the TN line from you...and it breaks my heart. But we do have fruit trees and veggie garden and I can a lot! I do wish the vids were more current because I understand you did this a couple of weeks ago. Oh well. You have to do what works for you and your family! Can't wait to see the new home finished!!!

ACV to wash your leather apron and then to let it dry in the sunlight, before its completely dry, you should put some leather oily soap on it, to recondition the longevity of your apron. I remember watching Rebecca getting you that newest apron from one of your videos via this KZitem channel...its hard to believe that I've been watching your shows for 8+ years! Like WoW! Congratulations to your brood! I'm happy to see that the kids have their own channels to record & remember for their future families! I had my first experience with losing a cow i was attached to recently. Unfortunately, it was the worst situation in every way. Heavy bred momma cow, infected front legs from an accident that my inexperienced decision-making and animals acting crazy because stress caused. No meat out of the whole thing because how sick she was and antibiotics we used to try to save her and her soon to be calf. Saved none and had to put her down because she was getting worse and suffering. One of the hardest moments ive had.

@@jeanneshannon5607 i’ve never eaten a bull but it sounds gross especially if it has a bad smell. I suppose it’s like it is with pigs, you get the boar taint on the meat (not edible to me) I imagine the same thing would hold true with intact male sheep and goats.

Harvesting is a challenge. In July we left our homestead to our two oldest children. We will live aboard a boat for the next five years. January I answered the phone to crying. My daughter returned to the ranch to see slaughtered chickens and feathers. The neighbor’s dog vicious killed them. I had to keep my cool and say they are just chickens, to calm her. They were not just chickens they were my girls with names. Losing livestock and harvesting is difficult. The chicken killer’s dogs were fined. It was the second time and we had the security footage for evidence. Long live Stud Muffin in your heart, legacy on the homestead and your audience’s heart 💜
