Watched this film for the first time a couple of days ago. I must say that I don't entirely love some of PTA's work, at least out of what I've seen. I thought that _There Will Be Blood_ and _Phantom Thread_ were very good, but they didn't have the kind of impact on me that they do for most people. The only film of his that I genuinely loved prior to this was _Boogie Nights._ But somehow, this film just did it for me. Everything about the film just clicked for me. The acting, the direction, the writing, the fact that it didn't really feel like three hours, but one of the best things about this film for me was the soundtrack. I'm not very familiar with Aimee Mann's music, but upon hearing this as well as the rest of her songs for this movie, I'd like to hear more. Not to mention, the scene where all the principle characters start singing along to this song might be my favorite scene in the movie. It was just something so unexpected that I didn't know I needed until I saw it. And let me just say, only Paul Thomas Anderson could do a scene like that and not make it feel out of place and cheesy.

My brother committed suicide last weekend by overdosing on something. He was found with headphones on, presumably listening to something. This is his youtube account. He made a playlist containing 6 songs that was edited the day he passed. This is one of the 6 songs. With the method he used, he was dead after about 30 minutes, probably unconscious around 12 minutes. I like to think that it was peaceful for him with his music on. I love you Myles, I'll miss you everyday for the rest of my life.

You poor soul I just wanna say that I've been suicidal before many times. Throughout my life. I've had 7 attempts on my own life. It is one of the most traumatic things that you can go through. Your brain is trying to kill you. Snuff your life out. Sometimes I cannot believe I'm still alive when I wanted to end it so many times. Some days I wish I won't wake up the next day. Other days I find hope. It's all so subjective. No one has the right answer. Some make it. Some don't. I'm still here.

I am introducing my kids to magnolia and I’m reminded how impactful the movie was for me. And how there is a specific version of this song that I remember. On the Canadian Apple Music, it simply isn’t available. The other versions, primarily the one from her bachelor album are just… wrong. There’s a harshness to them that this version is absent of. Those other versions just don’t work. They’re too something. But they aren’t this. I’ve seen this movie countless times. I’d say close to 10. I still remember being so mad at Kevin smith for his blog post that blew up about how he hated this film and thinks it’s pretentious. I equate it to king bashing kubrick’s shining. These artists elevate it to a new level. Smith is amazing. No doubt. But he’s not pta and is in a very different league filmmaking wise. I know PTA has been know to be pretty terrible but I hope he’s changed in the 23 years since magnolia launched. I still remember buying this on dvd. I remember where I was and how it felt outside. This movie emotionally impacts me like Philip k dick novels do. His writing is so odd and strange, like Deckard’s existential crisis toward god in do androids dream, to his emotional breakdowns from psychosis in a scanner darkly - this is prose that’s weird. Some that are quoting lyrics from Aimee’s songs. I hope one day people can see this like we see Fellini now, I think there’s something beautifully poetic about everything odd in this film.

@@lmc2375 I disagree. But, I mean, that's the whole beauty of art in the first place--the ability to take and interpret things, and intent, in sometimes radically different ways. I'm not saying you're wrong, you know what I mean? Just that, to me, the power of this song has always lain in the feeling of a seemingly gentle, lovely musical backdrop and vocal set to words that suggest something much darker...specifically, it nails the sensation of wrestling with suicidal ideation and impulse in so many different ways. "Prepare a list for what you need / before you sign away the deed", the sudden burst of energy you get once you've decided to do it, and now need to start to plan...and of course, just the main theme of the song...it's not going to stop, in fact, it will get stronger, and if you CAN'T wise up...then just...give up. In that little burst of falsetto. (By the way, I'm not advocating these ideas, just saying that they've expressed how I've felt in my blackest moments)
