Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, located in North Charleston, is Charleston's most visited plantation and was named one of America's Most Beautiful Gardens by Travel + Leisure magazine. Its gardens, which range from camellias to daffodils to azaleas, have attracted visitors from all over the world.
With parts of the garden being more than 325 years old, the plantation has been in the same family for three centuries and each generation has added its own individuality, making it a varied and unique experience.
We took the "From Slavery to Freedom" as the main guided tour, which includes a visit to four houses that symbolize four different eras. The estate was established in 1676 and slaves lived here from the beginning, but the first house was not built until 1850.
After the tour, visitors can head to the small zoo where they can find a huge variety of free-range animals, including peacocks, deer, goats, pigs, birds, squirrels, and chickens.
The plantation and gardens are a wonderful place to visit and provide lots of shade to make the heat bearable.
