I don't think we truly appreciate how good people at the highest level of competition are at their craft until they go up against normies. It was Paul Morphy, greatest chess player of his time, who said "The ability to play chess is the sign of a gentleman. The ability to play chess well is the sign of a wasted life". This was said, of course, before top players were making millions of dollars or before anyone was making any money at all from chess outside of gambling, but it just goes to show that it takes a lot of time and dedication to be good at chess, something Bill Gates obviously isn't interested in, it's not just about smarts.

I dunno about that. He went for an uncommon defense to shake a relative novice out of their comfort zone, but each move after that looked like basically just the best move in the position. I didn't see any moves that looked like they were alternatives to what he would have played against any other player make it flashy, just very straightforward pressure on a glaring weakness Gates made on move 3 until the kingside was forced open.

@@fluff5 Bd3 doesn't give any more range to the bishop, it blocks the d pawn making the black bishop unable to get out, and also blocking the queen. The only thing it allowed was the castle which, as you said, was a mistake. So he lost a tempo, blocked 2 pieces, and opened the gate for a blunder.

I feel like the pressure of playing someone such top tier quality would play a huge role because watching Bill play it was like he couldn't strategize at all it was hard to watch, but not having the added pressure of being there and actually playing for real i feel like it's a lot easier for me to so easily notice how much Bill seemed to lack entirely in strategy and move choices.

The knight queen mate is something children learn early in their chess careers. That said Gates using his Bishop to defend his king's pawn allowed for Carlson to threaten a fork of his knight and Bishop. Gates probably should have moved the pawn on the king's side and then moved his Bishop to the long diagonal.

Yes he is very fast. At hitting the clock. Honestly, bullet tournaments are half ‘can you play quickly’ and half ‘can you hit the clock quickly and optimally’. It would be nice if the clocks were accurate as well

They both aren’t geniuses. Magnus’s strengths are strong spatial abilities and working memory but his overall iq is in the 115-125 range Most people at the top of their respective industries even in academia don’t have genius level intellect either. IQ is 1 factor of many

Gates was very lucky, but he's also very smart. The way he and Norman founded Microsoft can't be achieved by an average person. They were freshman in college back in the 70s, claimed to have a compiler (they didn't), set up a meeting to demonstrate the compiler and wrote the compiler in 3 weeks. It was purchased, then they dropped out of college to do a startup. A person with average intelligence in the 70s can't make that happen, no matter how hard they work.

Other than Bill Gates blundering the last 2-3 moves, he honestly played a lot better than I expected. When the video said he checkmated him in 12 seconds, I thought oh he prolly got him with the scholar's mate (4 move checkmate) But he honestly opened and developed pretty well for some one who likely doesn't play chess too often.

Not really, he is known more for squeezing small advantages out of positions and winning seemingly drawn endgames. All players are aggressive when playing someone a quarter of your rating with one minute on the clock.

That's because he knows the opening lines, which typically end up locked into a few set ones after the first two moves. For example, in a King's Knight Opening Normal variation (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6), White basically has two options: 3.Bc4, the Italian Game, and 3.Bb5, the Ruy Lopez. After either of these openings, Black has only a single-digit number of viable options.
