I have Magpul's on both of my rifles. At first, I too was concerned about the obvious play in the legs, but this ended up being an asset while bench rest shooting, as the arc of fore and aft movement can be used to make small changes in elevation. The legs actually lock in position and cannot fold up during use, as they can with the external-spring-design bipods.

For me it was the smoothness, I do mean the Magpul doesn’t have springs on the outside, or other “straight” corners. Also I use it for a .22 so the tensions on it are very low. If I would want one on a 308 I would look for another one, but I’m very happy with my Magpul.

Funny that you say that. I was literally having a conversation about that yesterday and we said essentially the same thing. If you just want SOMETHING, the magpul is a clean, easy to live with design that plays nice. If you want a very solid and precise setup, something else is needed.

There is metal /alum reinforcementin the magpul. And its also meant to have the wiggle so you can load and so if it gets dirty it wont lock up

I now have the Magpul bipod for sling stud QD. It came with 2 "mounting gaskets" to use for a narrow vs wide forend. I didn't see you discuss that with this review. Did you have those gaskets and did you use them at all? I'll be keeping this one for the reasons you stated AND for the fact of the wiggliness (?) that it has--I see it giving a bit of better loading and positioning capability with that vs the "cheapo" bipods I have. The legs deploy nicer than a Harris style and lock nicely. Will it hold up to the stresses that a bipod experiences? Only time will tell on that. ;) I really like the ability to easily lock the tilt to a desired position and didn't find the attaching knob to be that inaccessible as you experienced. Thanks for the interesting review.

Yup, I tried both plates and found the one that worked best on my stock. It FIT nicely, no complaints there. I disagree that it's wiggle helps pre-load, you don't get any load until you run out of wiggle. I didn't like that the minute it unloaded under recoil things were going to be wobbly until it came forward again. Realistically though, this is not a deal breaker. If it works for how you use a bi-pod, awesome. Some folks love them, no question, so it isn't like I think my opinion on it has to be universal. Also, if you compare it to a cheap bi-pod, even one of the lower Harris models, it should absolutely be an upgrade. If it had been enough lighter to be noticeable I'd have felt VERY differently overall, it's just that for the same weight I see no reason to not use the Harris. It's worth noting that if you go rail mount and use an adapter for the Harris rather than one of the special rail mount versions, the Magpul is probably lighter and sleeker by a decent bit. I'd definitely take the rail mount Magpul over the adapter plus bipod on an AR or similar platform. I avoided that by using the LaRue version that has a rail mount rather than stud attachment. I definitely came off harsher than I think I intended, I just don't get the hype on these things. Also, people seem to be confused since I started the video as basically an unboxing/initial impressions and it devolved from there. I didn't intend it to be a full review and decided to NOT do a full review. I'm still waiting for someone to give me a good reason to give it another try. :) I think it will hold up fine to anything short of abuse. Magpul plastics tend to be great at taking punishment from even pretty hard use and any impact hard enough to break one of those legs would probably also bend a Harris badly enough to be an issue. It's probably tougher than the Caldwells by a good margin.

I just saw that non sling swivel version are lighter. A couple ounces is not a huge difference, but on a percentage basis it is. So the ones that are lighter WOULD be noticeably lighter than the Harris.

Hey Man, I liked the comparison & review. I’ve been considering a Magpul for my Ruger AR556. I agree with your conclusion as well. Thx.

It didn't even get to the 3min.mark & I got the impression the magpul didn't stand a chance. The presumption was it was cheap because polymers were used in its construction. Many modern firearms use polymers,i.e.,Glock,Springfield,FN,as well as many rifles & shotguns. Harris has a long history & is a well made bipod,but,it has its drawbacks as well,mainly,if you drag the rifle back or change positions the leg(s)can fold up. Most have their pros&cons(Magpul being no exception),but it does have interesting features such as the pivot function can be locked out & the rubber feet can be swapped out w/Atlas spiked feet. Everyone has their preference,which is great,but I believe a comparative review should be more objective about products being reviewed.

I got an M-Lok version of the Magpul Bipod. The advert made it sound lighter than it feels. I got it because what I consider to be a suitable Atlas costs a bit over twice as much. As far as Harris goes, I only have experience with older models and they are rusty now! LOL. Also they are sling swivel mount and I don't want to install a sling swivel. I think my next accessory for my KP-15 build should be a morning star.

I would never say these expensive bipod aren’t worth it but it’s a bipod… I can do the same thing with a rock… a bag of beans rapped in a gun sock… a tree….I used a cardwell and it never broke… tried a Harris for 50 buck more… and I don’t get it. Its good but I don’t beat the tar out of my stuff and I’m not going on 10 miles marches any more… I’m sitting in a deer stand and shooting at a buck that has been eating corn and a salt lick for a year… not sure this is really hunting but there it is… even if I’m walking 5miles in Colorado… not sure a few oz are going to kill me. Getting 200+ lbs of meet off a mountain is my concern. If I was jumping out of chopper into a hot zone… maybe.

Biased much? A lot of things he complains about are by design. 9:53 "this doesn't have a pivot feature, it's not supposed to be doing that" .. yes, it does, and yes, it is .. then "I may skip the rest of this test because I'm not too thrilled here" because it's not supposed to pivot, yet it is supposed to pivot
@BulletsNBrass

That feature is not on the sling swivel model. And my complaint, as you saw, was that when it was NOT supposed to wiggle side to side, it did. I have no idea if the other versions do the same when locked down, and a lot of people may not care. Plenty of bipods basically float in place, but it wasn't what I wanted, which I made pretty clear.

You think you would look at the specs and see the listed weights of both bipods … you think you can tell the difference of a few ounces or maybe even a pound in hand sounds easier than itis
@BulletsNBrass
Жыл бұрын
Well, the difference in this case, is, oh wait, 0 ounces. Both this model of the magpul and the S-BRM are the same weight. Yet most of the folks promoting this one at the time were bragging on the lower weight due to polymer construction. The lighter versions of the Magpul were a couple ounces lighter. Now, to be fair, they were not just lighter but also add the feature I pointed out was lacking, so win win there. Also, if you're shaving every ounce on a rifle you probably aren't concerned with absolute peak stability (or you'd likely skip the Harris too) so a couple more ounces off the front of the rifle are pretty nice.
