CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur, India in collaboration with an electronic company Messers Accelor Microsystems, Chandigarh has developed a prototype magnetostrictive sensing (MsS) device coined as “MagStrics” for pipeline inspection. The device comprises a rapidly quenched magnetostrictive ribbon which is also prepared in the laboratory. Magstrics can be used for inspection in both ferrous and non-ferrous pipes. MagStrics generates an alternating and static magnetic field to induce magnetostriction in the amorphous ribbons which appear as reflected ultrasonic signals. The input parameters in MagStrics software like sound velocity pipe material, pipe length, and cursor position display the location of the defect in the pipe. MagStrics is capable of detecting defects in pipes like holes, cuts, localized corrosion, etc. The device can also be used for structural health monitoring of pipes embedded in soil or sand.
