This lady was my neighbor on Chicago Southside 90th and king dr. In 1964, yes for REAL ! , very nice lady, was always working on her yard when she wasn't touring. Had a " drunk " for a husband. A " Jim dandy" chasing skirt. Spoke to her a couple of times, skipping down her block to go play with my school friends. And yes! Her hair was Real long, she kept it pinned up under a scarf or netting. Had a nice ride, l think it was a " Buick"?. Yes a very beautiful blessed woman too !. Miss her voice! Now that was SINGING!.

Awesome. Bit to young dit that myself. But being the third generation blessed with having been introduced to her music... I did get blessed to have met a fan of hers, Aretha Franklin. Both woman blessed by the spirit. Though personally Mahalia I listen when I need to cry and find my strength. Well it makes it easy as a sunday morning with them singing in church to get into the state I want to be.

Mahalia's power, passion, few can match it. My go to if I feel I need it. Aretha was a lovely lady though. Also awesome singer with soul and passion. With Ella Fitzgerald for me a "holy trinity" as a matter if speak, without intent to diminish the good Lord. They are angels of Him He blessed us with to aid our souls with their soulfull singing.

You may have said a mouthful, brother. Many of the gospel albums in Mahalia's day had pictures of churches or the cross or some other emblem on the cover. Now you see gospel "divas" dressed to kill and decked out on the CD covers. It's impossible to believe that God is glorified. But that's what impresses the masses.

My mom had the "Bless This House" album on which Mahalia recorded this song, and while my friends thought Frankie Avalon and Fabian were the hottest things in music, I was rockin; out to this and to other great Black singers like Dinah Washington. I love the way Mahalia dressed for appearances like this -- nothing fancy, just a simple dress any Black woman who could afford one would wear to a Sunday church service. And her voice is literally incomparable. This is the REAL rock 'n' roll -- not the music of the devil but the music of the Lord!

@@mrakennedy I guess you didn’t know that by the end of her career Mahalia’s appearances were upwards of $10,000 a session. She did not die a pauper. Mahalia was just frugal. She spent more on others than on herself. She was recorded in an interview saying, “...all you can wear is one dress at a time...” so I don’t get the impression she was caught up on clothes and style. Her focus was blessing others in song and spreading the gospel all around.
