No doubt that the walls of Jericho couldn't have resist the wonderful strong voice of Mahalia!

No, I don't think she started it over. I think she was just playing around with the audience. I have a couple of other recordings that she's done live, and she does the same thing by singing a little...I guess to have the audience beg for more...LOL!

I've always loved her off beat claps they kinda show that ecstatic feeling she is having. I got to stand next to her once when I was around 10yrs. old....still one of the greatest gifts of life to me. Justice for Trevon Martin!

I love Aretha, but I question her being rated among the best. Her talent has waned as she has gotten older. Unlike Mahalia, Ella, and other even contemporaries Patti and Gladys. Mahalia was remarkable.

This was recorded on Mahalia's final tour in Europe in 1971. On this Tour she became very ill and had to be taken home to Chicago. She died in 1972. She never fully recovered from this Tour.

She was ill long before, suffering with a heart condition as well as diabetes. A great lost to the world 😔

I love how she "teases" the audience with just singing a little bit...and starts up the instrumental....and how Mahalia belts out "What'cha say?!!!" LOL!

@jafdee...Real talent does not wane. Re's voice may not be what it use to be but she can still bring the house down and I am a witness to that!! Voices will change and take on different textures. All of their voices changed as time went on but I would never say their talent diminished!!

Wow! Now, this is what I call a true performance. Mother of Gospel, is what she was to me, gave her all and all. Again, Wow, what a gift from God.

You know how some people are taught to clap on the down beat and some on the up beat. If you can't feel the right beat you can totally mess up a singer or keyboard player. I think it's what you said. They were off beat poor things.
