On April 29 2024, at around 3 am in the morning, residents of Kamuchira village in Mai Mahiu were ambushed by raging waters flowing furiously from the Kijabe hills. The violent water had escaped from captivity, having been held behind a blocked tunnel under the old railway line, up on the hills in Kijabe forest.
With it, the furious river carried huge boulders, trees, and everything else it could collect, dumping everything downstream. Sleeping villagers were caught unawares and suffered the full wrath of the raging water.
Those that were lucky to survive narrate stories of the horror they witnessed. Houses and everything in them were swallowed and swept away by the water, leaving a field of rocks and tree trunks. Today, the land at Kamuchira village is dotted with graves, a bold indicator of the loss that befell the village. Family and friends gone, forever.
In this video, we take a walk through ground zero, and try to grasp what really happened. I am joined by Stephen, who guides me through the village. Later in the video, we reunite with Brian, a forest ranger at Kijabe forest. Brian takes us deep into the forest to see the source of the water that wrecked havoc in Mai Mahiu.
Enjoy.
