Thanks for the tips. Your southern maidenhair ferns are stunning. I've had good luck with staghorn ferns and moderate luck with button ferns inside. I did try very small maidenhairs in a terrarium and they thrived for awhile. In retrospect I probably exposed them to too much direct sun and wasn't careful about humidity. Your video has inspired me to try again.

I have had a maidenhair fern for a number of years here in Vancouver Z7b. Mine is in full shade, but not in deep woods. It gets light but not direct sun. I leave it in the ground all Winter. Sometimes we go below freezing, and lately maybe 6 below for a few days. I consider the fern to be semi evergreen. It loses most of its fronds but then comes back like gangbusters in the Summer. Never had an issue. I'm definitely getting some impatiens that colour!!

Beautiful ferns! When do you bring your ferns inside? Like what temp temperature in the fall/winter do you decide it’s time to go in?
@SydneyDorman
Жыл бұрын
Not until it flirts with freezing temps. They are in a protected spot under a Japanese maple so it doesn’t tend to get as cold as out in the open but you should bring them in when the temps start to flirt with freezing. When it gets around 35 I like to bring them in just in case it dips below them temps they expect!

I have been coddling my maidenhair fern indoors in zone 7a, will now bring it outdoors for the summer as I have plenty of shade. Did you say you leave your fiddle leaf outdoors all year? Mine is huge and has never been outdoors. I think yours will look beautiful on standard. Thanks for all the tips.

I have killed 100's of Southern maidenhair ferns in my lifetime 😢 I love them but they do not like my house...not enough indirect bright light. I don't think they will do well outside in our dry Cape Town Mediterranean like climate in Summer & winters are too wet & cold. But I may give it a try...nothing to lose, just another dead fern if it doesn't work 🤔 😅

@@SydneyDormanHi Sydney, I have what I’m assuming is Southern as it looks exactly like yours. I’m in zone 3b so you can imagine how cold it gets here in Manitoba. Mine is in full shade and comes back in the spring. I don’t think it will ever be the size of yours, but maybe it’s worth a try. It gets lots of snow cover for insulation, so maybe some protection would work for you! Tried inside, but it died! 👏🇨🇦
