Great episode. my wife is just getting into 300-600 yard matches. She traded in her Trap shotgun for a .223 for practice. And we have a 6MMXC build on the way for her to compete with. She started a while ago using my 308 but she had the same problems as Sarah, it did not fit and we would spend time changing lop and comb hight between details. The only problem is she will be a better shooter than me in no time. Keep up the good work

Why would anyone trade in a nice firearm for the script they give us? I have never sold a firearm if mine. I sold a rifle for a guy once and got hives. Sold a pistol for another friend and the guy used it on himself. I was not meant to sell firearms, only buy them, and buy them. Just keep turning the script into things of value: guns, land, gold, silver, items of value. Keep enough to function but truly what is its value in an inflationary scenario?

Sarah is pretty awesome. The best thing I ever did for my wife's shooting, was to present the opportunity for some training by someone other than me, and then get the hell out of the way. The dynamics of long term relationships are not conducive to instruction. After her class, she went from someone that tolerated shooting in order to share something with me, to someone that is carrying every day and taking others to the range to introduce them to shooting.

Sarah is spot on around minute 24. My instruction/help towards my wife is received as a lecture. I'm hard on myself and, therefore, I'm hard on my wife who is a reflection of me. We ended up having more than just myself show her the basics and it's paid off in the long run. Great appearance, Mrs. 8541!

Thx for including the outtake at the end. :-) Made my day. The comments 'bout taking your girl to the range were spot-on and reminded me of tips received when I was a newly licensed pilot taking someone for their first ride in a light aircraft. "YOU might be proud of your skills in doing spins/stalls and recoveries and mild aerobatics but someone on their first ride probably won't enjoy that or be impressed." :-)

I know this is a year late but I'd like to strongly second you and your wife's suggestions on getting your significant other involved. I turned my wife over to other instructors I trusted to get the basics. There's a husband/wife dynamic that can hinder the learning process. Practice patience, patience, patience. If you want to drive her away from the shooting sports try pushing her too far too fast. And once that happens getting her back on the range will be nigh impossible. Let her determine the speed of the process so she will be maximally comfortable. You can do a lot of harm here. And for the ladies, remember, we guys absolutely love seeing you on the range shooting with us. My wife now shoots USPSA, Steel Challenge, 3 Gun and recently .22 Precision matches. It's a joy to compete together. Approach this intelligently and reasonably and the smiles you generate together are priceless.

I got my better half into shooting by combining mtn biking/hiking with our dog and the magic of the .22LR rifle. I strapped a .22 to her hydration pack, put mine in the scabbard of one of my Eberlestock packs, strapped a poly gong to the outside and off into the woods we go. She learned to shoot well and now she loves to shoot!!!! Our dog even has his own ear and eye pro!
@jameshealy4594

Agreed on the .22, airguns are also a valuable tool as they're significantly less intimidating for some people (and ridiculous fun). A dog wearing eye and ear pro would crack me up, but it's probably a good idea if he will stand it.

outstanding! It is refreshing to have questions and answers regarding your spouse going shooting! My wife and I have been shooting together for 28 years, and has evolved into a common activity for us. Thank you Sarah for bringing up the point of you getting instruction from someone other than your spouse, especially because us Marines come off a little gruff in the "instruction" area, as well as the point you made on making her feel welcome, and that she accomplished something, I never put my wife in a position that may embarrass her, as her being nervous is enough for her to deal with at first :) Sometimes I think it is easier to teach my students in Hunters Education than family members because of how the teaching can be given or taken...the end result is what matters, right? Family time at the range! Semper Fi John & Sarah, Now get out there and shoot

Great content of the shows as usual, I think it's great that you bring Sarah in for the female point of view. What I would guess(?) is that to get our girlfriends/wifes to the range and shoot with us would be if Sarah did an intructional video on setting up/adjusting a rifle to fit her and her tips on how to do so, aswell as how to put it to practical use out at the range and having her commentary on why and how she does things and what works for her. Keep up the great work both of you.

I second the notion! :-) what a great idea. I know I was personally surprised when on one particular range trip all the women we were introducing to shooting preferred my 1911 .45 to the other pistols we had there (a 9mm Beretta 92f and a truly awful .38 revolver and a few others). But it turned out to be the narrow grip on the 1911 (and the compensator on it taming the recoil) was more comfortable for 'em than the wide handles on all the pistols with double-stacked magazines - something none of us guys would've guessed.

John love your show always educational. I am an avid long range Hunter using a Rem 700 308 with a timny tringer, Trued action, mcmillan stock, ior 3x18 scope, 20 moa pic rail, badger ordnance bolt knob, badger ordnance trigger guard and detachable magazine and badger muzzle brake. I hunt mostly in the Southwest where 500 yards shot is normal. I've been thinking about going with a 6.5 Creedmoor for the next evolution of accuracy and distance. Do you recommend the 6.5 for medium game such as, deer, sheep and some varmint hunting. The reason why I would go 6.5 Creedmoor is because all I would need to do is get a high-performance barrel and replace my existing one.

Thanks Sarah (hope I spelled it right) for the tips on a women's view. My wife just told me days ago that she would like to learn how to shoot skeet or trap what ever that game is called. I don't know either but willing to learn if she likes it. But my problem is I only have a 12 ga. But I was looking to buy a 20 ga but you gave me a idea. Maybe I can see if I can find another women to take her the first couple of times. And then maybe I can join in. Or she might to tell me find my shooting buddy. Which would be fine with me too. Thanks Sarah and John.

take it from a long time skeet shooter . a 12 gauge is fine for new shooter. just start with low brass or skeet loads. there is very little recoil and the spread opens up enough to get a good pattern at the skeet range or in the dove feild. our range had a tradition , the first time a guy got a perfect score of 25 he has to shoot his hat and hang it at the range . the women had the option of shooting their hat or shooting their bra. last time i was at that range there were 8 hats and 3 bras hanging.
@sarahmcquay9549

The one thing I have found when I skeet shoot is that I prefer a shorter gun (Rem 1100) over the longer rifle (870). Mainly because by the time I get to the third shot I am tired of holding the rifle up! If it is a short barrel, I can swing it up faster and get more hits!

Hey John , love the channel. I am getting into long range shooting and have a question. I picked up a Ruger precision rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor and am looking to get it out over 1000 yards. The problem is where I am based the optic selection isn't all that great. I have narrowed it down to a few scopes and would appreciate your opinion. The scopes I'm debating on are the Vortex Razor HD 5-20x50 first generation and the Bushnell Elite Tactical ERS or HDMR 3.5-21x50.Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I have a couple of AR's chambered in 5.56x45 Nato, and keep thinking about a AR10 / .308Win large frame AR, but the lack of standardization is annoying. I know you can take white tail deer with .223Rem though a lot of people advise against it unless shot placement can be near perfect. What is you're opinion of 6.5 Grendel in an AR15 frame as a dual purpose hunting / target rig as apposed to an AR10?

I know you've reviewed a lot of optics on your show, but I haven't seen anything from you about Steiner. I'm looking at upgrading to a Tier 1 optic that I can use to compete with, and would like to get the most for my money. The Steiner T5Xi checks all the boxes on paper, and it's at a great price point. Steiner has a stellar reputation, is battle proven, and there seems to be no downside. But, I know that with high end Glass, you usually get what you pay for, and I don't want to spend $2000 and then figure out I should have thrown down another $1000 to get the right scope. Do you have any experience with that scope? Any advise would be helpful. Thanks
