This song explains how main idea is used as text evidence to identify main ideas. This is an incredible supplement for teachers and home school parents to model the concept of main idea in a concrete way. This song can be use to show how to find text evidence of supporting details to identify the main idea in simple text. The examples carry over to cultivate the understanding of young minds in such a way that they can transfer the information learned in this video to actual literary text or verbal classroom conversation. I've used this video as both a supplement to a basal text and as a stand-alone version.
I’ve created an entire series of teaching videos to explain the components of English Language
Arts in a way that connects them to each other and to real world reading, speaking, and writing. The links for the videos in order are below. Please look for my other videos and share them with others that may find them helpful.

Lyrics: Main Idea Lyrics by Melissa Corbett
Verse 1: I was reading in my class the other day.
I gazed upon the question printed on my page.
“What is the main idea of the story you just read?”
This little voice inside my brain so loudly said,
Chorus: “What's the main idea? What message do you hear?
Whether you write or read, there's a basic need to make the message
clear.
What's the main idea? Where do the details join?
When every sentence leads, whether you write or read, to one central
point, that's the main idea!”
Verse 2: I reread the story and wondered if I knew
a way to state the main idea and show some proof.
I found details that all gave hint after hint.
Now, I think I know just what that question meant.
Chorus
Verse 3: I returned to the big question written out for me.
I felt I knew the main idea was plain to see.
I wrote my answer, and I turned my paper in.
On the way back to my seat, I saw my teacher grin
