I’m heading to northern Maine September 10-17th. First bear hunt, I’ve shot many big game out west but never had a chance on a bear yet. I can’t wait! This video has me even more pumped!

Is it absolutely necessary to bait these bears for a hunt or is there a reasonable alternative? I’m asking this question in earnest because I have very limited hunting experience and would like to learn more. Clearly this endeavor requires a great deal of work and preparation just to have a chance at an animal, far from a guarantee. So I was simply wondering about the strategy and methods of this exciting sport.

Maine's 4 legal methods for taking a bear are as follows Bait, Dogs, Trap, or spot and stalk. This video shows a brief look at the bait hunt which is the most popular method to harvest a bear in Maine, I think the average success rate is around 30% for this hunt, success being measured by a harvested animal. Your right in saying its not guaranteed, to sit 5+ hours in a stand for multiple days in a row is not for everyone. But when bears do show themselves it can allow for folks to make a ethical shot rather than a moving target. I hope I answered your question, thanks for the comment.

Man I'ld have to pee every ten minutes sitting next to that brook haha. Looks like an awesome set up, been up to eagle lake area 4 times now and there is no better adrenaline rush then bear hunting. Where about is this place, I'ld like to check it out. Gotten 4 and not a one made the death moan, 2 dropped at the barrel and one went about 50 yards but barely any blood, the fat literally clogged it right up, but I knew he was done could here the gargling for about 2 mins straight. You get a second take it, seems the fat clogging the exit would isn't that uncommon, having a good guide that knows bears and knows the area and trails is key, like this, didn't take long to find any of those bears. That's a good night in camp when 4 bears come in, everyone having a good time.
