I agree, he had never even seen combat or experienced the horrors that TRUE veterans have experienced. He was a reservist and firearms instructor. They're definitely using that as an excuse. Sure he may be suffering from SOME sort of PTSD, as there are many causes for it. But IF he suffers from it, it DEFINITELY isn't because of combat. People suffering from PTSD don't typically target other people and leave suicide notes. My best friend suffered PTSD from actual combat from 14 years spent overseas in the Army Rangers. I've seen PTSD firsthand, and what that guy did has nothing to do with PTSD. That's just an excuse to make him seem sympathetic.

Not really. I had a cousin who was sycophantic. He heard people who weren't there. I lived in Florida at the time. He was placed in a mental facility. For a long time. Where he was safe and so was the public. For the most part he was harmless. But after Florida closed all these facility's. He was put out to fend on his own. To become a police responsibility. I was young at the time. One night he showed up at my house.with a 44 magnum. That he had stolen from someone. I had a young wife and a two year old son. Scared the crap out of me. Was able to get him to give me the gun. Thank God. He was safer though he didn't like it being in a mental facility. And so was the public. This is a social problem. It needs to be addressed. Our mental health system is non existent. Honestly. Unfortunately I don't see it getting any better.

Yes it can happen anywhere but there are a lot of places that have very low crime rates and never have violence like this in their community. I live in a close knit farming town and would be shocked if something ever happened here. In 10 years of being here there has never been anyone die from violence. Home break ins are pretty much unheard of. The only reason we ever hear about the town in the news is due to fatal car accidents. Now where I grew up 35-40 minutes from here is a whole other story. It was a nice town when I was young but now a shit hole. Shootings, stabbings, robbery, drugs, etc. Along with the neighboring towns. No one is surprised when anything in that area happens. Can it happen in my town, of course it can but is it normal here no. In areas where there is not normally violent crime people are shocked because stuff like that doesn't happen there. You are more likely to hear about a farming accident and a cow killing someone or an off road vehicle like a dirt bike injury then you would ever hear something like this. We must always stay vigilant everywhere but there are places where it is safer to live or people are surprised when things like this happen.

It’s frustrating that people just want to complain and come after the gun issue when this happens, but it’s the lack of mental health resources that’s the real problem. And I’m not just talking about “oh you’re depressed, go see a doctor and get some pills”. No. When you’re as mentally gone as this guy is, and you’re making substantial threats, there needs to be a long psychiatric stay so they can regulate you on medication. Mental illness is complicated and not one size fits all. Usually with psychosis, there’s cocktails of medications that can take months before doctors know if it’s the right fit. But now, instead of keeping the person hospitalized, they tell them to go home and take their meds and report back. Obviously this isn’t working, especially where most mentally ill at a severe stage, will not be consistent with their medication. We need state run psychiatric hospitals again, except with better standards and state inspections to insure there’s no abuse.. which is the reason they all got shut down in the first place.

This was another failure of the VA and our mental healthcare system. A dear friend of mine, a veteran who did three tours right after 9/11 - the SSRI’s they put him on made his issues even worse and added new problems. After continuous grievances and notes put into his psych - He turned the gun on himself. His presence is missed daily, but I’ve always counted our lucky stars that if his pain and confusion needed to yield, I’m glad it ended like that - than like this. *Much love to our veterans.* I’m so sorry our government continues to fail you after the incredible magnitude of efforts you put out and the unspeakable tragedy you are forced to take in. May the gods watch over us all and assess fairly when the day of judgement arrives. - To my dear friend Carlos, along with all of the souls caught in the crosshairs of this tragedy, peace unto you and journey well ♥️

They can tell him he has TBI from loud guns or schizophrenia but if he refuses to take the meds nobody can help him! People have to want help! Just like any addict too! Duh 🙄 there’s no blaming the VA or the Doctors! He likely refused meds and the terrible diagnosis of schizophrenic with the hearing voices and psychotic thoughts symptoms! Nobody wants that stigma!

There are times that it’s the individual who doesn’t want to receive the help even if the help is offered. The person may complain about the VA or the care that they perceive is not available but that would be false. Many times it is the individual who cannot accept the fact that they actually need care. A warrior without a war is idle with their thoughts. Rest in peace Carlos.

Hospitalization and psych meds for 2 weeks and there you go , back out to society. Many we'll meaning mental health facilities prescribe medications for people suffering from mental illnesses. However they usually don't do brain scans or analysis the majority of the time, because it's expensive. Im not excusing what this man did, it's horrific. However improper diagnosis and treatment with psych meds wich always have the potential to exacerbate a chemical imbalance in the brain have to be considered as a result. Throwing pills at the problem is part of the problem. My condolences to all of the families and everyone affected by this awful situation.

The usual banter happens after the mass shooting of innocent people. - - the Govener of the state giving speech, the police chief promising safety and to catch the culprit, - candle-light March, - the psycho-analysts getting their 'glory moments' on television, - the politicians condeming the 'brutal' act; this same drama is repeated over and over again; but nobody and especially the American law-makers do anything to impose "COMPLETE BAN" on guns of all description. Lawmakers are thoroughly dishonest about this national problem. Vivek

Well if he was in a psychiatric hospital not long ago, I’m pretty sure he was on something. Maybe something that was helping him and then he thought he got better and stopped taking them and went off that deep end. That’s the usual story with something horrible happening. That the person stopped taking the medication.
