“Ua Mau Ke Ea ‘O Ka Aina I Ka Pono…. The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.”Without the land we die and its life will only be perpetuated if you are right in your care for the land.

I appreciate you reacting to this song, the modern colonization of Hawai'i is real. I recommend reacting to the cover "Hawai'i 78 Across Hawai'i" This is a cover adding visual context aswell as adds schools and artist from all around the many islands!

I had the pleasure of living for a couple of years on the Kailua-Kona side of the Big Island of Hawaii, though I spent a lot of time on the Hilo side, a few years after IZ died and was fortunate to have some online Hawaiian acquaintances who lived there and introduced me to other local people who accepted me. This opened a path into being invited to local get-togethers, getting to learn a lot of their side of their history, their society and lives away from tourists, their myths, totems, and gods, heard family stories that were generations old and heard and saw incredible songs and dances. Also ate some great Grinds, food. 🙂 Met and talked with a number of a local people that had known IZ well and met and talked with a lot more folks that had seen him at shows and clubs around the Islands. These years were some finest times. IZ was very Proud and outspoken about being Hawaiian; represented the best of what Aloha really is, always with dignity and at times humor. Whatever he sang, traditional Hawaiian tunes or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star he lent such beauty to. A favorite of mine, among many, is a tale of Maui, "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man" but by all means watch his rendition of the unofficial Hawaiian national anthem "Hawai'i Aloha" from this same show which he did at and for the folks of little traditional fishing village on the Big Island, Miloli'i, in 1995. Mahalo and Aloha

Israel Kamakawiwoʻole, was bloody amazing, I first heard of him in 1997 shortly before his death. His rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is hands down my favourite version.... Thanks for your reaction...It brought his talents right back to me💖💖💖

As a kanaka maoli that remembers this song when it came out when I was a kid, there was hope for the Hawaiians to regain at least part of our sovereignty, but over 40 years later, we as a people are still suffering. More of us have to leave due to greed and money because they cannot afford to stay in their homeland.😢
