Good eyes. This was indeed a Toei Animation production. It actually followed up the original Cutey Honey TV series and used a number of the same staff, i.e. the same character designer and composer. And Yoko Maekawa, who sings this song, also sang the original Cutey Honey theme.

I also grew up in Japan in the 70-80s. I think I saw many adults who were crazy about animes. They weren't as conspicuous as the aniotas nowadays. But they sure loved animes. And I used to think, "heck, these are for us kids. what are you adults doing watching stuff like this?" Anyway, I'm just amazed to see even this particular one is known to audiences overseas. 海外に知られてないアニメなんてないかもしれないね。10代のうちに日本を離れちゃった自分の方が知らないものいっぱいみたいだ。

Captivating Majokko Megu-chan opening. . .oh yeah!!! Why was it never shown on American TV with English subtitles? Hard to believe this 1974 series is now 47 years old--the plots and characters were better developed and believable back then. Too many such series nowadays are either formulaic, superficial, or in some cases downright offensive to older anime viewers who admire the classic programs. What I've said will perhaps be corroborated by other fans of the genre. 🐈🐈🐈🇬🇧🇺🇸🇯🇵

Nope. You are wrong. This was the 7th of the "Majokko (Girl Witch) Series" by Toei Animation. This was created for purely kids, not intended for any adult audience. Ya know, I've been hearing/seeing/reading about a lot of these old style anime from so far back. While it seems kind of scary to watch something from the 70s, I'm rather intrigued about some of these works, especially the earlier magical girl series like this one and Cutey Honey as well as the remainder of Nagai's works and influence on the shonen and mecha genres. I'm honestly just very intrigued, and if you guys have more suggestions for classic works to look into, I'd be happy to do so. :D

Not really. By the time this show came out, it's been 10 years since the first Magical Girl anime came out, Sally the Witch. After that, animation studios created their own magical girl animes such as Akko-chan. However, this was the beginning of magical girls to an adult audience, so it was a first, but not as a founder.
