Why do people breed birds. I can’t quite understand the desire to breed, I’m also concerned about the qualifications one must have to buy one of these birds. Do all breeders have standards minimum standards? Do you guys do in-home visits and make sure that there is a proper home and that people are set up with the proper equipment? I have dogs and I understand breeding dogs for certain work e.g. Service Dogs. in labradors are probably the best one for that because of their temperament and desire to please. But I don’t understand why when there seems to be so many that are rehomed. I literally think people should have to pass some sort of qualifications in order to own one of these. This is not the same as owning a dog I won’t get a bird because I can’t give it the kind of attention that it needs. I am so upset when I see these plucked birds and I know that people have got these from eggs forward. They don’t know what they’re doing or how to get past the hormonal issues, the molt or various other things and the bird winds up half dead or plucked naked and surrendered. I’m not trolling. I’m curious as to why this is a practice. I’ve heard that this is so that people will not go through the illegal wild bird trade. I don’t think that breeding these things eliminates that issue, because buying them is sometimes too far out of reach for people who seemingly want these birds. Anyway as you can tell I certainly have opinions about it but I have not ever heard from the breeders point of view I guess. So if you feel like educating me great if not great

Hi Hope Springs! Long but interest question - but I will try just to give a short response :-) Breeding birds like a lot of other hobbies is just a hobby. Yes - we are dealing with live animals - just as other keeps fish, dogs, cats, horses etc. All who keeps live animals must amd should always try to give them good conditions and treat them well. You could then argue that a trapped animal is trapped and that they are better of in the nature. But I dont thanks this is different for any other kind of animal as well. But yes - all animals should be treated in the best possible way. And with all live animals you will find someone who should never have had an animal. That goes as well for chickens and dogs and cats. I personally, have always had a fascination for birds - and the birds way to show that they are thrieving is to make them breed. I hope this clarifies a bit?

@@TropicalAviaryBirds Thank you very much for responding to me. I appreciate you doing that. But what are your standards for selling these birds? There are so many rehomed birds I just don’t understand I guess. There are studies that show that birds that have been hand raised from their hatch so in other words not raised by their sire if you will or parents are the ones that pluck the most. So do you keep the bird until they’re completely weaned and on their own? Or do you sell them shortly after they’re born because people want to hand raise them like a baby? We humans have to stop treating animals like hobbies don’t you think? Can’t we find other things that please us. I’m not a vegan or an activist or anything like that I’m just saddened and distressed by seeing how many of these birds get purchased or given as gifts. Because people don’t understand the immense commitment it is to take on these birds, at the first or second sign of bad behaviour a.k.a. normal bird behaviour they don’t know what to do. So I do hope that you have very strict standards for selling these birds. Too many are just given away or worse killed. Don’t you think that breeding is contributing to the problem?

@@hopesprings4967 Hi again 😉 Most of the species I breed dont go to regular first time bird keepers but to people who have had birds for many years and love to give the birds great conditions. I feel that your questions mostly relates to birds kept alone as a tame pet bird and not kept in pairs in aviaries for breeding? In that case I do agree with you that many tame parrots go to people who do not have the time not knowledge to have such birds. Nevertheless, this is not such birds I sell - but I never sell to people, who dont know how to treat birds. Having said that, I dont think this is in any way different from many other kinds of animals as cats, dogs, rabbits, mice etc… For all these pet birds it is important to educate new owners and make sure they begin with the animals best for them and the possible conditions. There are problems - but there is for sure also many many birds that thrieve in captivity and are treated very well by lowing owners. So in fact I see your question more as a general one on all kinds of animals kept for “fun”. yes - we could find something else to do - but many studies have shown great health benefits when people have pets. Also, I think it gives many people a much better understanding for nature - and also a connection to nature they would not have had any other way. So, if it is a matter of keeping pets or not - then I am pro keeping pets. But yes - they should always be kept under good conditions - and I think there should be hugger penalties to those who mistreat their own pets - or animals in general.
