I'm from the Republic of Ireland and have the opposite politics to the UK Conservative Party. That said, it's clear that John Major was a decent and well-intentioned man, who was probably the wrong kind of leader for the Conservatives at that time (if it was possible to have a 'right leader' given what was happening in the party). Major's consistent efforts for consensus in the party just left him hanging out to dry. For the standards in politics, a good man who was probably promoted too quickly and was PM too young and relatively inexperienced and suffered all the consequences. I'd imagine that even his political opponents would regard him as an honourable man.

Omar Memišević John Major hardly bears sole responsibility for that. The ones who chose the path of ethnic cleansing bear the primary responsibility for those crimes against humanity. Granted, it was a failure on the part of the EU, but, again, Major was one voice among many, and hardly represented the nation with the top army. Even at its peak of power, Britain was predominantly a naval power.

@Omar Memišević No... Major was told by the UK Army that far more troops would be necessary than were available to decisively stop the conflict... which meant that he was forced to negotiate with other countries, notably the US which favoured arming the Bosniaks. Major did not wish to stoke the conflict further or unfairly favour any one side. Even he did go in unilaterally as you seem to suggest, British casualties would have enormous and likely prompted public calls for withdrawal. As it was, like the rest of the world, he was caught off-guard by a vicious war instigated primarily by Milosevic and Tudjman that escalated very quickly. At any point in the war those two men could have sat down and negotiated a peace, however they did not wish to and sought total victory on the battlefield. Meanwhile the rest of the world scrambled in to try and provide aid to civilians.

It's bizarre reading the comments below. Amazing how so many people become saints as soon as they're no longer in power - the people lauding Major below are probably the people who criticised him so much when was in power. Selective memory or just rank hypocrisy? It goes to show how irrational so many humans are, and what short memories people can have.

@@darwincity I can see how that happens; without speaking specifically about Major, a PM leaves office and people think about his policies' immediate impact for good or bad, but then five, ten, twenty years later, the impact is different. And people can compare what he did vs. what his successors did, and we have a more complete understanding of the larger contexts that he had to operate, so we know a bit more about what constraints he was under, what policies could or couldn't have worked better, etc.

I thought he was a boring man and a liar when he was in power. I think his government was scandal ridden too. In retrospect he is probably the only prime minister over the last 40 years that left the country in a better state than when he found it. He took Britain out of recession and unemployment was falling when he left power. Britain's finances were in a good state when he left. He is one of the few English politicians who had his reputation enhanced by his involvement in Ireland. He started the Irish peace process and that is something his predecessor could never done. He ended the poll tax too.

Blair was just so good that he kept up the Economy along with the lowest levels of interest and inflation rates and unemployment rates and keeping the economy steady at 3% with very small debt as a proportion of GDP. In fact Lowest among G7 and combined that with reduced poverty by increasing Child Benefits and introducing Tax Credits and benefits. Then spending record levels in Health and Education and reducing crime by 33%, The Good Friday Agreement and Kosovo and Serirra Leone. A brilliant PM who will be undermined for Iraq and his dodgy money making schemes.

John Major is the oldest living ex-PM at 81 years old in 2024. Every leader has his own style of leading the country, and one must govern with the support / mandate of the people. If he has been able to join in Politics earlier as a cabinet minister during the conservative years of PM Edward Heath & Margaret Thatcher, valuable insights, crisis / battle tested & critical analysis experience would have been gained. He could have gain more critical unanimous supports amongst his MPs and cabinet ministers, strengthening his hand in handing urgent pressing crisis. Strict party, government moral standards could have been imposed then. Unfortunately, after UK GE 1992, everything seem to gone down from there. To make things worse, he could have kept Ex-PM Margaret Thatcher in the cabinet as Senior Minister in an advisory role, all disagreements could have been kept behind close doors and not lead to unintended meddling, disrespect and intense animosity. A Senior Minister would have been able to assist the PM to succeed in his role, maximizing every opportunity for UK to prosper and survive. This is not about staying in power or welding power behind the "throne". She (Margaret Thatcher) could have forcefully remain party leader or General Secretary of the Conservative party to have a very important last word and veto power.

So i hadn't noticed anything about the size of his---his head. -----At (50:00) we find the P.M. on a Bonn-y jaunt to Krautland---scuse me, Jerry-many*---he steps from a Mercedes (whadja expect, a Volkswagen?) to say Guten Berg to Chancellor (could the Federal Republic organizers POSSIBLY have scouted a different title, after all the "difficulties" with Adolf H. only a few years done?)---to Chancellor Helmut Kohl---Major stands & walks alongside his fellow captain, and i notice---Kohl has a noggin the size of a soccerball---or Major has, well---was it just the camera? -----Big Giant Head In Summit With Small Giant Head, shoulda been the title of the Fox Movietone Newsreel that shoulda been made. -----One can see now why the German was called "Helmet"; too, one must acknowledge from the evidence this video constitutes that John Major was NOTHING but supportive of the Kohl industry. What GOATS stare into CAMERAS!---i heard that P.M.JM even brought gifts for the Chancellor's progeny: all the media whining, & right under their noses Major was aiding the Kohl minors! -----Small Giant Head or no, John Major had a heart as big as Texas, or Bavaria. The kid from Brixton, who woulda thunk it? * I was BORN there, so i have a German Card, can make Remarks with impunity and immunity. DOWN, Snowflake!!
