You have to angle the phones so that both lenses converge at a single focal point. That is why your videos didn't work and that is what caused the extreme jittering

and also low fps due to taking individual pictures .. he could just shoot video from both and then put the frames on order
@dj1NM3

I think it would look better if he (or the subject of the video) was in the same relative place in the framing of each camera image, which is conveniently just happens to be at the convergance point. That way the subject wouldn't jitter side-to-side, but the scenery around them would, just like the music video used as inspirarion. Unfortunately, I'm not too sure if this can be done dynamically (eg: fixed camera rig position and moving subject, or the other way around) becaus the convergance angle would change as either the subject or camera rig (or both) moved.

No. To take stereo images you should never angle the lenses in (toe in). The cameras should be parallel to each other.
@CrustyBiker

As well as the phone's need to both point straight, they also need to have the camera sensors the same space apart than your eyes are in your head, no more! I know you would think the further apart the more dramatic result, but optimal is about 2.5 inches or 64mm, a flat plate at the back of the phone's could correct the forward facing part.. Also to get better results make a double cam so both cameras shoot at same time, that way sideways movement won't jerk left right left right all the time..

Fantastic idea! 2 suggestions that might help get better quality 3D effects. Place the phones closer together, only a little wider than your eyes are apart. Our brains are used to images being eye width apart so anything much more than that feels wrong. Secondly, once the phones are closer together, they should face straight forward and not be tilted inward towards each other, again like your eyes. Otherwise great video

"they should face straight forward and not be tilted inward towards each other" Yes! That is an important mistake that beginners in 3D photography often make.

The time stamp idea is great! Try moving the cameras closer together, almost touching. Put a little clear tape on the center of the display and mark the center of each display with a cross. Get cameras to have the same object [maybe about 3 to 6 meters away] centered and level on the crosses. The angle will be less which may help reduce eye strain.

Apple bought an Israeli startup company around 2011 that was given the specific task of making a 3d imaging camera for smart phones. Their design was 2 lenses side by side. Hate to tell you this but all smart phones today take 3d images and can map out 3D space accurate to a millimeter. Its why there are 2 lenses side by side on all models now. Its SPECIFICALLY for 3d imaging. The issue is, it wasnt designed for the customer...It was designed for the "intelligence community" to start mapping out humanities faces in a biometrics database. (keep their cattle tagged and tracked)
