With lots of stumbling "umm..." and "so..." (my sincere apologies), I give a tour of the 6502 code behind the game JakeOUT! a Breakout clone written in 6502 assembly for the Apple IIe computer. Steve Wozniak developed the Apple IIe in part to be able to write a software version of Breakout, which he had accomplished in hardware for the Atari 2600.
I show where to find valuable resources in 2024 for programming 6502 assembly on the Apple II. Check the comment section for some links!
The Source Code for JakeOUT and everything else I show is there.
6502 assembly is a great (and extremely cheap) hobby that anyone with sufficient interest can get involved with. Please feel free to ask/tell me anything in the comments or perhaps teach me something I don't know.
It helps a great deal to know BASIC before attempting assembly.
If you are brand new to programming but still wish to make games for the Apple IIe, you can write them in BASIC and then compile them using "TASC - The AppleSoft Compiler" for a significant speed boost.
It was reading the book The Emperor's New Mind (Roger Penrose, 1989) and specifically its description of Turing Machines that started me down the path to the development of this game.
In hindsight, I also should have mentioned the built-in debugger in AppleWin, It is a great tool for establishing breakpoints in your code and then single stepping through the code you wish to examine while in execution.
