Here is backyard bat house I recently made using some rough sawn cedar fence boards that you can get at any home improvement store. The overall dimensions are approximately 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" x 20", the roof has an overhang of about 1 1/2".
The bottom of the bat house is left open giving the bats easy access the three interior compartments are 1" deep for the bats to roost and keep them warm.
The bat cutout was made from a 1/4" thick scrap piece of ply and painted black off camera. To hang it up I drilled a small hole in the back side for it to be able to slide onto a nail or screw.
Some of the benefits of putting one these up in your yard is that they can eat an incredible number of night flying insects i.e. mosquitoes and can consume up 1200 insects an hour. Also, bats are great pollinators of the seeds and fruits that they eat.
The bat house should be placed in an area where there is lots of sun (full sun) if possible, up high 15 to 20 feet off the ground and close to a good water source.
This time of year (spring) is the ideal time to build one!
