I have a 3 in 1 craftsman shop vac. I take off the filter and use the detachable blower to blow all the dirt off the filter. Filters get very clean and last Years this way.

I got nearly 10 years out of my old Craftsman filter before replacing it. I cleaned that one by taking it outdoors, sticking a broom handle through it and shaking the dust out. Not ideal, but pretty effective. 2 minutes after I'm vacuuming fine dust and it's plugged again, so this dry cleaning method is probably less hassle and mess.

I take the ShopVac outside, remove the filter, wear a dust mask and vacuum the filter. Let the dust fly down-wind to bother the pesky squirrels. I can almost hear them sneeze...achoo. I like making gadgets also. Good stuff, liked the video.

Very well done video. You also have nice skills and ideas. I'm not a lazy person by any means and it seems like I'm always working on some invention of mine, but I choose my "battles" on what I work on and that looks like too much work for me. I'll just continue to close the trash can lid as much as I can with my arm inside of it as I bang the filter around inside. Not as clean as yours but good enough for me. Thanks again and keep your fingers.

Quick modification suggestion: Make the top support (nearest the drill) narrower and add an inlet hole to connect the ShopVac hose to, but attach the hose to the blower port on the vac. This way as the filter spins it has air blowing on it from the inside too. Just a thought!

A regular drill will work, but not as well. I used to do the bang and blow thing too, but outdoors. So many times I got a face-full of dust when the wind changed direction.

@n8guy The risk is about the same, for either tool - router tables can cut too and grab the work piece. Push blocks take away control of the work piece and can actually make some cutting procedures more dangerous, due to the increased risk of kickback. Fact is, woodworking and woodworking tools are dangerous and it's the operators knowledge, competence and confidence in what he is doing that will make the operation safe.
