This was a bit of an odd ball woodworking project for me, as I had no idea what it was I was making, and there were no woodworking plans for it from the start.
similar to a weaving loom, this warping board, sometimes called a warping loom, was requested by my other half who is a keen knitter and crocheter for use dying yarns that will self stripe once dyed and turned from a skein in to a yarn cake. thats a posh name for a ball of yarn for those of use you like me who know nothing about knitting or crochet.
I had a look around and found that several versions had been made as DIY projects using limited tools and even PVC pipe. although I used the half lap woodwork joint along with tools that most DIY indie dyers probably won't have such as a pilar drill or Drill press and the table saw, the joints are really far less important that one might think as the finished item is the main consideration.
In its simplest from a simple square piece of MDF or plywood could be substituted and holes drilled for any size of wooden dowel. The cuts in the ends of the dowels can easily be made with a simple hand saw or pull saw if the exact tools shown are not available. particularly the bandsaw.
The project is finished with shellac, sometimes known as french polish or even friction polish by wood turners. no finish is really required since the yarn will not come into contact with the timber whilst wet. I simply used what I had to hand at the time.
