In this video, I’m going to show you how easy it can be to make char cloth with some common household materials. Char cloth is a great fire starter that can really come in handy. It’s made with cotton fabric and will take a spark extraordinarily well to create an ember. I will be using aluminum foil as my container and the fuel source will be 91% isopropyl alcohol. This actually isn’t the best way to make this. Firstly, aluminum can actually melt if not watched carefully and secondly isopropyl alcohol does not work as well as ethanol, methanol, or denatured alcohol. I just didn’t have any of those on hand and wanted to see if this could be used in a pinch. I start by wrapping cotton fabric inside the aluminum foil, making sure to leave a small chimney. This chimney will allow the moisture, smoke, and gases to escape from the cloth. I moved it around on the stove because I was afraid of the aluminum melting like it has done in the past. Since isopropyl alcohol isn’t a great choice of fuel, I needed to refill it a couple of times. After a little while, the smoke began to catch fire. This is a good sign that the char cloth is almost done. In about 8-10 minutes the smoke should eventually stop. At that point take off the container and allow to cool. I took mine off a bit too early because I ran out of alcohol. As I open it, you’ll see that the some converted into char cloth, but there was quite a bit that wasn’t done. Testing a piece out, see how easy it catches a spark, but when it burns to the unfinished cloth, the ember dies. This piece of cloth can be cooked some more to fully convert it into char cloth at a later date.
