Big hearted people know that humor can be used to mask pain, so they only laugh when the joke is genuine, and small-minded people only find joy in the misery of others, so their humor tends to be crude and generally unfunny, therefore not counting as humor at all. maybe i'm overthinking it, but that's the way i like to look at it given the ebullience and general joi de vivre of the rest of his performance.

Don's performance was so intense, he needed many days of rehabilitation and rest after filming the "Make 'em Laugh" scene. It is considered by most the best dance scene ever filmed. He choreographed it himself, but never took the credit, which he regretted later when wanting to direct musicals.

used to do diving and once had to wait a couple minutes so i jokingly went under on a sandy patch and acted asleep, when he was ready he tapped me on the shoulder and we went up for the check "you oke there?" yeah i just wanted to see what its like to be deep asleep , i know i can take the pressure (it was in a calm lake no risks taken)

Alison Bell -Smoking may have affected his stamina, but it was the CONCRETE floor that did him in. Imagine all the bruises and sore joints after endless rehearsals on that hard surface.

Thanks for your replies. I did not know he was such a heavy smoker, so that would not have helped. Also, Gene Kelly was an extremely hard task master on Donald and Debbie and basically rehearsed and danced them into exhaustion. what a fabulous scene, though!

He didn't! A lot of that ended up being dubbed over so he could dance. I'm honestly all for the practice. Live singing is normally impressive in person, and it saves a lot of energy that can be used for more takes

I had such a hard time believing Don could contort his face like that after hitting the brick wall. And that quickly!!! Could that possibly have been real? But the entire song is exactly this from start to finish. The whole song comes at you so fast your senses simply get overloaded and you're left agape in awe! What brilliance!!!

I think it's in the script. Gene was a bit of an egotist. As far as Fred is concerned he was basically a ballroom dancer. Not all the time, but, most of the time, what Mr. O'Connor did wasn't in Mr Astaires bag of tricks.

What he said about when doing comedy the world being at your feet is true. Think of how much respect Robin Williams has even years after his death. He spent a lifetime making people laugh. He was respected despite some of his life choices.

Donald O'Connor had to be one of the most talented guys EVER in the classic Hollywood era. This guy could do it all -- dance, sing, act, and was a fantastic comedian to boot. And that running-up-the-wall-and-doing-a-flip stunt. . .wow! Too bad we don't have multi-talented actors and actresses like this anymore!

The truth that these other commentators are neglecting is that this was a very physically demanding role that required MULTIPLE takes in order to perfect. Also, dance musicals (with the exception of La La Land) are just not in style right now.

Dancers are always underrapreciated. That’s one of the biggest problems my dad and I had wi5 ‘Glee’, they didn’t give Mike Chang/Harry shun Jnr enough solos and they when they did, they kept cutting away from him or only did half body shots instead of full body shots.

The wonderful thing about this scene to me is that it's talking about how simple comedy always works & is timeless, and it's the perfect example itsself!! A lot of the rest of this movie (despite being fantastic and classic) is very of it's time, it resounds less with a current audience - but this will ALWAYS hit!

What can I say except Donald O’Connor is just awesome in this movie. And “Make Him Laugh” is just that, AWESOME. Donald is so great singing and especially dancing in this song it’s like “Wow”, especially those blue eyes. OMG! They are just gorgeous. 👁👁
