ok... trick that learned from an industry pro back in the days when I was going for my 3D animation degree, plus my own experience (Maya user since Maya7): 1-) This trick is similar to proxy mode, but this works in the event your rig doesn't have a proxy mode: Have 2 different skins for animation on each own layer, and hide the one you are not using atm. One for rendering and doing a quick check on your animations (with skin deformations applied), and one just for animation (no skin deformations. Just chop up your model at the joints and attach those pieces to the corresponding bone). You can animate so fast without having to wait for Maya to calculate skin deformations or proxy mode. I learned this from a guy that worked on several Hollywood films that visited my school back in the day. 2-) 6:35 I create a layer in the display tab (bottom right menu) and hide it that way. Its faster for me as I don't have to open extra menus to make an object visible again. The best part is that I can make the object 'transparent' (wireframe) so I can still see where everything is. You don't want to animate a scene just to realize your character is walking thru a piece of furniture you forgot it was there or something like that. You don't have to 'guess' or have to constantly turn visibility on and off to know where everything is this way. This is specially good when animating multiple characters or objects in the scene. Is your character dodging tons of flying objects coming toward him/her? place the flying objects in a layer in 'transparency' mode, and start animating without all the extra objects in your screen slowing Maya down. I hope this information helps anybody. See ya!

Let's say for example that I have two models. One proxy and one normal poly that is a bit slow on Maya. They are not interchangable within the same model but instead two Maya files. Is there a way to do the animation on the proxy file and then transfer all that animation data exactly on the high poly model?
@SirWade

As long as the rigs / controls are the same - yes! Reference the proxy, animate, then replace the reference to swap to the other

Care if you use the Evaluation Tool!!! It does not save with the scene file and it can mess up your whole animation! So even saving before you debug is not saving you... This should be mentioned!

I don't know if ya will even see this. Is 24 fps still the standard for animations such as Pixar and dreamworks stuff. Are those films even rendered in 60 fps? What was it at when you left Dream Works.

It's still 24fps for pretty much all film and TV :) Games are usually animated at 30 from what I understand

ey sir, is there a way to record any movement/transformation while animation is being played? i think would be very useful even if you've to go bone by bone and attribute by attribute, first you do movement of bone "IK FOOT", then you do the rotation, then another bone.... etc etc .i think that would speed up dont you think?

I need help, since I just moved onto Maya. I want to know some of these: When I animate a rigged character, what's the fastest way to select all the rigs so I can edit them in graph-editor? I found that I have to select individual rigs to see it's keyframe and I can't select all the rigs with box-selecting all of them.. At the moment this is what I struggle with..
@fitzhugh7463
4 жыл бұрын
Do you mean all of the controls on the rig? Maya maybe showing the joints as well as the controls which for some reason keeps you from selecting all the controls. Try going to the “show” menu and deselect everything except for the polygons, controllers and nurbs curves

Parallel evaluation is a game changer in the industry for animators. Why did it take so long for developers to make all the cores calculate viewport deformation instead of just one? Did they ever sit down with animators to see what animating means?

So you are familiar with animations and all the stuff around it, will you do Blender Tutorials? It could come in handy to make use of the situation, learning and sharing. I would wach it :) I am not a artist neighter would i do animations but knowing Blender you can do some manufacturing on a CNC machine. BlenderCAM is a MOD that allows you do CAM operations and have some G- code for your CNC to mill stuff. Or just use a 3D Printer... But Blender is not so easy to begin with. Specially for someone who doasen't know jack shait about all this abra cadabra. Cheers Jimmi

Hi! I discovered your videos a while ago and i looove them, they are really helpful :) Recently I realised that i want to pursue a career in animation, and i think that i like 2D animation more than 3D (at least at the moment). Also, i'm from argentina, so in order to get my work to a professional level i will need propper training. Is animation mentor a good option for me, since i don't know if i want to specialize in 3D or 2D yet? Thanks :)
