Great and sound business advice, especially about not underselling oneself or the product. Thanks Peter

Hi Lawrence, do you recommend setting up as a sole trader or a limited company? Which route did you go for? Cheers, alex!

Hi Alex. Really best to speak to an accountant about your strategy. We started off as a sole trader and we are now a ltd company. Benefits to both to be honest. If you looking to offset losses and reclaim the tax, you need to be a sole trader. Ltd can only roll forward losses to next year.

Rewatching these vids because I think its excellent and very informative. You talk about how you only use buckfast. Did you try the different breeds, or did you go straight to buckfast? F0 queens cost a fortune, how often do you purchase them? Ever go down to the troublesome F2?

We've tried a few different breeds and prefer to work with Buckfast. We keep some Welsh Black as not everyone likes imports but we find there aren't as prolific and ultimately that is what we are after. We purchase a couple of breeders every year at F0 and always graft from F0. No need to go down to F2 when you can graft and have F0 available. We used to go down to F2 and F3 and you can get trouble, you can also get nice colonies. You just get greater variance and are more dependent on local drone populations

Good advice re Accountant & Quickbooks. The desktop version has lots of extra features that the online version doesn't though. I'm an alpha/beta tester for Intuit so I get to see/use the new features before anyone else. I also use the Accountant/Premier edition because I have an accountancy/IT background so I need the extra features (planning/budgeting, etc) but these might be over the top for a sole trader. I realise that you're a Buckfast devotee and that's probably where your comment about large colonies needing lots of winter food comes from, but, take a look at good quality Amc too (not the mass produced rubbish you get online). I've tested these against the best Buckfasts available and I find them better in my area...and a lot of it is about area and when your nectar flows are.

Yes I do love quickbooks and find it a has all the functionality I need for a Ltd company but I do like it when they add new features. The receipts feature is excellent and saves a lot of time. I like buckfasts but I'm always open to new genetics regardless of lineage. Honey is my driver. I'm not fussed on colour or lineage. Where do you get your AMM from?

@@BlackMountainHoney I'm an Amc breeder. I test Amc queens from the BeeBreed population - take a look at my Twitter (twitter.com/Bplus_Amc ) and you'll see the quality of stock I work with. That's why I say, look at QUALITY queens and not the run-of-the-mill queens you'll find on the internet.

I notice that you sell honey mail order, do you find that people are happy to pay the cost of postage given then price being much higher than super markets.
@BlackMountainHoney

Personally, we don't sell much though the online store. It's a difficult one to break into and it's time consuming packing up the orders. Wholesale and retail markets work a lot better for us

@@BlackMountainHoney Yes, I tried it and really struggled as the price with postage seems very expensive. I am struggling to get into retail outlets and they all seem to have other local bee keepers supplying them.

@@markjohnadams1293 as was mentioned in the videos, have you looked into selling bulk? I've found a couple of cafés that are wanting to buy buckets of my honey near me. Saves on the time it takes jarring it up too.

How much do you sell your honey wholesale for? I'm trying to figure out how much of a discount shops should get for buying bulk. (This is for my mead so will probably be different)
@BlackMountainHoney

We only wholesale in jars but your price will be completely location dependent. Most retailers will want 50% mark up absolute minimum and a lot try to get towards 100%.

@@BlackMountainHoney 100% is cheeky. Saying that Mark up is generated by your profit isn't it? Surely they can't know how much it costs to produce? I'm guessing they also look at the overall price of the box of product to think if its worth it. Certainly interesting to think about.

@@greghamilton889 I fully agree. 100% is too much IMO. I sell at X and tell them the RRP is Y, feel free to price at anything above that.

Around 100 production colonies and a couple hundred nucs. It's not my FT job though. Most bee farmers work on around 400-500 per bee farmer
