Dear Justin Jennings, I'm not in the habit of writing about videos I watch, mostly just watch and go to the next one, but yours is the best thing I've found for exactly what I needed! This really is the best "edutainment" one I've seen. Thank you for not keeping this a " trade secret" 🕵🏽 I don't know how to share a picture of what we've ( hubby and myself) done but it was a brand new railing he built and welded, (with my ideas of course!) and easily it would of costed over 2500.00 at least, but I would say we saved around $2000.00! Thanks man! You are truly the Rust King!

The vinegar etches the surface increasing the surface area and dissolving the oxides to expose a fresh surface, the salt provides ions to facilitate electron exchange between the iron and oxygen, making the oxydation proceed faster.

Good video. I've done this to many sculptures over the years. It works great. The only thing I do differently is I keep two spray bottles. One for each, hydrogen peroxide and vinegar, to keep them fresh. I spray on one let it dry then the other. I'd like to see a video of stripping the mill scale with acid if you can. You might have a better idea than me... Thank you 🎸

Nothing elegant about stripping the mill scale. I just spray it on, let it set, wash it off. It takes a few times to get it all off. Most of the time, I'm good with one or two treatments for the type of work I'm doing.

I love your videos Justin! You can use vinegar to remove mill scale. It takes longer than using acid. I use long pieces of pvc pipe with one end glued on, put square, round, angle, punched channel in and then fill with vinegar. About 3 days later pour off the vinegar and wire brush parts. I spray WD-40 on as soon as dry to protect from flash rust.

The Salt + Vinegar solution will give you a weak hydrochloric acid, which etches the steel and allows it to oxidize more rapidly.
@chrisdavis2161
3 жыл бұрын
You're Right the acid leeches the metal atoms and gets oxidized by the free oxygen from the volatile peroxide mixture. However, you don't need acetic acid to make this work because the mixture already has chlorine from the salt and hydrogen from Hydrogen Peroxide that can create "HCl acid". The vinegar is an accelerant but salt and hydrogen peroxide will do the same thing. But HCl isn't the mechanism causing the corrosion it's the free ions -Cl and +H that are reacting with the metal and pulling it apart. If anything the vinegar is just providing more +H ions to speed up the reaction

I've applied polyurethane over rust. It leaves it looking wet. And, it holds up okay for indoor pieces. Something UV resistant might hold up better outside. But, I've never found a clear that holds up outside in the sun for very long at all. You might want to talk to an autobody shop if you want something durable for outdoor use. Good luck.

@KirkVSSpock

As long as it is not in contact with water, rust will stop. You have to create a barrier beetween the hood and the elements. You can use a mat 2k clear coat (car body shop). It is very easy as the surface is rusty, this is great for the clear to adhere without having to sand it and ruin your effect. I practice this method on bike and it works perfect. Rust won't progress.

I just found and subscribed to your channel, I make metal art from time to time and prefer the rusty finish mostly for the look but also because when ever I paint anything in my shop everything else comes to a stand still for fear of bumping into or getting crap on the wet paint so I try to time the painting as the last thing I do for the day. I have a cnc plasma table and when cutting thinner metal I spray water on it while cutting to help prevent warping but if I leave the wet parts on the table over night that water will make some interesting rust patterns in the hot rolled metal but only on the top side, so ok for wall hangers but probably not for a gate or anything else that can be seen from both sides, linseed oil seems to seal and bring out the colors but im not sure how long it would last exposed to the elements so I use it mainly for indoor items and clear coat over the rust finish for outside stuff so it doesnt bleed or just no sealer for things like garden stakes where it doesnt matter. Really enjoy your video's and what you do and I'll be trying out the HP solution next chance I get. Thanks

You'd need to remove the zinc coating that prevents it from rusting. Sanding might work. I don't recommend breathing the dust. Soaking in acids will work. Don't breathe the vapors. There's ways of using using electrolysis to transfer the zinc to something else. Any process to make them rust, aside from the slow decay of time, is probably more complicated than its worth. I think there used to be spray paint that had a lot of iron in it that you could paint something and then rust the paint. Good luck.

Good points made by Clark Davis. A neutralizing bath will help with the acids. Also, rust is porous. Water gets trapped in it and you might toss your pieces in the oven on low to bake any remaining moisture out before clear coat. Even a hard wax can be applied. A common method in blacksmithing is to apply bee's wax on hot metal. I think you should experiment with sacrificial parts and see what works for you.

Well, I wouldn't bother making a grill or a smoker rusty. They'll usually do that on their own. I actually like a rusty finish when the context it right. Rust works well in rustic design and if applied to the right finish it is very popular in contemporary design situations. So, it's just another option for a finish instead of paint. Although unless it's a weathering steel like Cor-Ten, I'd avoid encouraging rust on a structural piece.
