This video is spot on! Very informative, especially the part about advertised drag, 10, 15 and 20lbs max is all you need for fishing the surf, piers and jetties unless targeting BIG Sharks. For those thinking they are fighting a Bull Red or Jack at 40lbs of drag, I suggest you lock down that reel (and actually test with a scale to verify # of drag) and tie it to a truck and see how long you can hold on before 1) The rod and reel flies out of your hand or 2) you go flying off or 3) the rod breaks 4) the reel seat breaks and goes flying through the guides.

Hey bro. I just wanted to thank you for recommending the okuma longitude a while back. They handled very well. I landed and released 2 blacktips (~50 and 70 lbs) and one monster ~150 lb bull shark. Not bad for casting from the shore! For a guy used to catching Michigan fish, it was a dream. Thanks again. Because of how well it went, I think I might upgrade to the Penn squall 50w and kayak it.

I love my Abu 6500 on a 7 1/2 ft ugly stick for jetty's and my 6000 Penn Fierce. They work great for casting lures or bait. For the surf I have 12 ft Beefsticks with Penn Squall 30 mono mag, Okuma Cortez 12 or Shimano Torium 30. They have handled anything the surf threw at them. I have a 15 ft Ugly Stick that I changed the guides to casting and added a Kastking Rover 80 that I built minus the levelwind, CT Bar, ceramic bearings, and a 5/8 inch N52 mono mag I made for it. I have casted it 180 to 190 yards in a field with a 16oz weight but it is so far untested actually fishing.

CRAIG REDMOND I love it. It is like casting a 4/0w. Since you already have an LX then you probably already know this, my only complaints are the clicker isn't that loud and the first few notches on the drag plate are too light for the drag setting I have it at and then it ramps up quickly where as a TLD 30 ramps up gradually. What are you looking to do with the new reel? Gonna be using the HXW for Tarpon, Kingfish and Jacks just added a 33 yard topshot of 80lb to the 40lb I had on it for the abrasion resistance.

Matt I'll mainly be using it for surf fishing, probably throw it on another pole for the jettys. I heard that you can cut the spring on the clickers to make them louder. The only reason I got my LX was it was too good of a deal to pass up. Wanted the HXW, still do but now I've been looking at the MXL for a small lighter setup.

The "advertised drag" isnt just about sales. Drag pressure isnt what the max drag is at LOCK, its the max drag the reel can give out SMOOTHLY before it starts skipping/jerking. And it isnt measured with a full spool, rather closer to the bottom of the spool.

Beach Bomber Fishing Tommy is a good friend of mine and I am a casting student. I have all of the rods that he offers right now either spinning or casting. The rods are built like a tank and I have never had an issue with any of them. They cast great and feel good fighting a variety of fish. The 8ft rod is a lite trout rod, but I have caught 20lb reds and rays with it and I was never worried about the performance of the rod. I have not fished with a century rod, but I did get the chance to hold a few. Seems like they are good rods, but they are pricey. I could buy 2-3 ccp rods for the price of 1 century. If you decide to go with a ccp rod, you will not be disappointed.

What are your thoughts on the Diawa Emblem's? I'm most fishing Pompano, whiting, bluefish, spanish mackeral, snook, and tarpon(which I normally break off or apply max drag and get them in quick as they are a waste of time to catch) and praying for a permit bite in south florida. My setups are as follows.... 16'4" CFS Monster Rods with a Diawa Emblem Pro 6000A 15' cheap Gamefis rod with a 6500 baitrunner 12' offshore angler power plus rod with a Daiwa Emblem Shot 6000A 11' Ande Tournament Surf Series rod with an old school Penn 7500. Can pretty much stagger all the surf zones. Sea weed a major issue here when anything out of the east is blowing and when the fish are biting so the long rods really help with keeping the line over the weeds instead of reeling in 20lbs of weeds constantly. Pretty much 30lb braid on all of them.
@BeachBomberFishing
6 жыл бұрын
you have some good setups! ate you asking about the emblem reel or rod?
@BeachBomberFishing
6 жыл бұрын
I have an emblem pro a as well, I hate the clicker, way too quiet, don't like that it's made out of graphite, hate that it's not sealed. It shouldn't even be called a surf reel, that's a carp reel imo. For $200 one can get a way better reel. Daiwa needs to revamp that reel.
@jonathank5289
6 жыл бұрын
I hear ya. I love the high gear ratio for reeling in pompano as they love the charge the beach but the quality of the reel really isn't that great. To many cheap plastic like parts on the real. I dropped the rod with the Emblem Pro on it and it landed on the handle and it broke. The old baitrunner and penn reels are built like tanks. No issue in over 10 years of use and abuse. Trying to fix it with out ordering a new expensive reel handle. What are the diawa reels I see you using on your surf rods?
@BeachBomberFishing
6 жыл бұрын
Yea, daiwa is black and white with their products, either great, or absolutely horrendous. Their spinning reels suffer in the drag clicker department. A couple years ago they made an attempt at a surf spinning reel called the saltiga surf, the drag was 'sealed' and it had a magnesium body, it was priced at $500. Well the reel was discontinued lol. I do like their conventional reels, i use their sealine and saltist black gold.

I'd get the ocean master then. The sp surf rod is more of a lure rod. The sp surf rod says it can chunk 3 to 10oz, but the rod loads at max 5oz. Anything ok er 5oz will probably snap the rod. The ocean master is an 8 and baiter that loads very well up to 10oz.

Thanks for the info and quick responses. Im new to fishing and find your vids a good resource and cool to watch. I see you use the Daiwa Sp surf rod quite a bit on your vids, is there a specific preference, if so, what do you like about it? We're going to Destin for vacation and I plan on doing a lot of surf fishing while Im there. I plan on using whatever bait I catch as my source (crab, small fish), and fish bites if I'm not having luck. I live in H-town so maybe in the future you'll see the one of these rods in action at the pier (with one of the Elite AF stickers!).

Hey dude, love the video. What would you recommend for a rod when targeting big sharks from a pier using a spinning reel? The reel is a slammer 3 10500 with 100 pound braid. Can't find a good rod to match it to save my life unless it's a 900 dollar peligic rod. I'm addicted to spinning for sharks!

You look into the ocean master surf rod? the 12ft can cast up to 12oz. I caught several 6ft sharks with that rod. Local tackle shop here in Houston sells a 10ft Fishing tackle unlimited rod that is strong af.

Would you go with a 9ft or 10ft ocean master for an all around good rod?

What kind of reel did you go with? I was looking at the 10’ surf ocean master with the BG spinning for both pier and surf.

@@atomicdad3920 I went with the same setup he had in the video, a bg 5000 and 10ft ocean master. I want to upgrade to a Shimano spheros 8k.... It feels built better with a loud clicker just doesn't hold as much line.

Hey. Can you recommend a rod with a line rate for 80lb test braid around $100 or less??

Surf and pier fishing. For a spinning reel. . I don’t target one specific fish. I Throw in and hope to catch something big.

I have a kastking rover 4000 with a 4m telescopic rod. Still learning how to cast live bait on it. Thinking of getting a bigger reel to match the rod. Im also thinking about getting the okuma rod when i get better at it

Great video!!! Always look forward for them to be posted!!! Quick question. We will be in Galveston fathers day weekend. My pier set is ok. But I was wanting something smaller for to fish the surf. I was thinking a daiwa BG 3000 and a 8ft rod. Mainly want it just for fish bites, salted clams or cut bait. Do u think that will be big enough?
@BeachBomberFishing

That'll work to catch slot sized fish in the surf. What 8ft rod you going with?

Sorry for the late reply, been really busy. The mojo 8ft is nice, the daiwa coastal sp surf is a great rod as well.
