My first paid photography job recently was where I offered to do a product shoot for free at a small business, and once I was done I was given 50 euro. I think especially working with older people (just not people in their 20s) they tend to appreciate the work and won't send you home empty handed.

Hey Lizzie. Thanks for your video! I have started my production company this September with a friend in Toronto. We have been doing church and wedding videos like Matti Haapoja. We believed it was a right timing in our life to start our own and a lot of the strategies for reaching out to clients and building our business were used through tips that the dope squad gave, especially you and Chris. So just in 7 months, we are now at a place where we can afford a living out of this business and we were able to upgrade our gears a lot (we started with a6300 with two very cheap lenses like samyang/rokinon, but now we are fully equipped with A7iii s with most of focal lengths covered with full frame lenses) + Aputure lightings and audio equipment. We got our selves an office and two major and couple smaller clients that gives us monthly projects + weddings every month. We are sustaining good relationships all of them and its been an amazing journey. First of all, I would really like to thank you two for helping us, we literally did exactly what you guys told us to do, and we are very thankful and surprised we reached this far in 7 month without losing any money. Now, we are slowly getting bigger and also getting overwhelmed by the workload. So we started hiring some freelancers here and there when we could not fulfill certain projects on our own. We are also at at stage where we have set a goal: to have 1 major client per year and to expand our market/niche. What I realized from the beginning of this journey and watching all the videos you guys uploaded is: that viewers like us who actually started the creative business (because a lot of the videos that you guys upload is to get us going and to get us started) is starting to feel the gap between where you guys are (where we hope to be in creative business) and the starting point. We are curious how to land bigger clients (I mean we did land 2 but we really don't know how LOL). Could you upload a video for viewers like us who are in middle of the journey trying to grow in this business? Like "So you Started: What's Next?" idk...lol What should our first or two years be looking like? How did you guys expand the market/niche? How do you manage over flowing projects? Do you guys try your best not to outsource them? Please teach viewers like us :) Thanks for all the videos! We wouldn't be here if it weren't for you and Chris. Sincerely, Danny ~

actually, my first Photography job was my favorite. I wanted to shoot promo videos for restaurants, and in the proposal, I sent I mentioned that I'm a photographer and videographer. So I got hired to shoot a new menu for an awesome restaurant and of course, I ate most of the sandwiches I shot. It kind of felt like hunting, you shoot the food then eat it.

My first and only “paid” gig was probably about 4 years ago, a colleague was involved with self defence and competitive fighting outside of work and he told the guy that runs it that I could do a video for them. It was completely out of my comfort zone and made it clear this was something I’ve never done before but up for the experience so I offered to do it for free. It was a challenging and interesting experience but I was paid £50 for it at the end and I think they were happy with the final product which they uploaded to their Facebook and KZitem. Life got in the way and I am only now getting back in to photography and videography again, but that was an amazing feeling at the time.

One of my first 'paid' gigs was taking some photos at a little event thrown for undegrad students at my uni, and I got like a 20 dollar gift card out of it. This was less than two years ago. The other day I had my first four-digit contract. Start small, work your way up, and you'll be surprised where it'll take you!

I do get the practice, and recognition and photo credit if my photos are used in our program books. I get paid a salary for my regular job but no addition monetary compensation. ☹️

The first like big kinda shoot that I ever did was for an elderly lady that was turning 100 and her family threw a party for her and they asked if I could photograph it, so I said yes even tho at the time I sucked and didn’t really know anything as much as I do now. And I’m the end it went ok, and they paid me $150 for just two hours! P.S. Lizzie Your personality is adorable and awesome 😁

such a positive video, as usually:).... at first it may be difficult to find someone or something to shoot, but then, when you do a pretty good job, your friends and their friends come and ask to do them a favor.... here the second difficult part comes - how to tell them you´d like even a small remuneration?
@VivianValeriena
5 жыл бұрын
Vadim_R maybe you can ask them in advance for a lunch treat during the shooting? I think it won’t hurt anybody. When you know that you do a good job in the future, you can refer them to your freelance profile that includes your rate so they know what to expect from you and your actual rates. Hope these helps! 🙏🏼

The most important thing is to put watermarks every time you do a paid work for someone before the payment is made in full. If they start to ask you to remove them, than you’ll know they’re those sketchy types. Just don’t let your time and effort to be used by these kind of people 👍🏼

I did like, three street fairs... one I paid 500 to be in...I made $400 back... So, i was under also with the cost of prints; but it showed me what to do better. The other few I did were free so I put in less work instead of overdoing it. So I wore my t-shirt design. Put up photography on one side and the other side I dedicated to my poetry books. it evened out peoples eye. I say try to do some shows... It's fun.
