Thanks for this Brian. A lot of techs don't trouble themselves with this kind of post because they couldn't be bothered but they don't realize that there are still a lot of people on fixed incomes who can't just spring for a new PC because they just don't have the money. Maybe some day but they do appreciate what you're trying to do as limited it may be with their present set up. Is there an easy way to tell just how much ram a PC is capable of running?

Most of the time to find out the PC's maximum RAM capacity you will need to go to the manufacturer's website and their support page. There you will enter the PC's serial number or other information and it will normally tell you what you need to know. If the computer is a homebuilt job, you will need to go to the motherboard manufacturer's website and enter the information off of the motherboard itself.

Thanks, Brian this has given me a few options for my old Ivy Bridge machine I have to admit that there are things that still confuse me like having Services and Processes because it seems to be doubling up on those items and there seems to be several settings that also are doubled up via Services. Processes and the general Settings. I find the Edge browser is the greatest hog of resources even on my main laptop.

One option is to only run an Operating System and Software that were contemporaneous with the machine. If it will take an SSD, even better. But, if the machine was once reasonably fast in its day, then it can be again, provided you don't run things on it that it was never designed to run. This is not as crazy as it sounds, because so many later upgrades have not fundamentally altered what the machine could once do when it was new. Obviously, there are many exceptions, it all depends on what you want to do. But, it is valid to say that older versions of Office, Photoshop, Illustrator etc, are still perfectly usable, just as they were in their day. If your budget is wafer thin, then going back in time can still get you a workable system up for very little outlay.

Great Video, ...I have an old Toshiba Satellite A305 laptop that has a Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo T5750 @ 2.00GHz processor, and over the years I maxed out the memory (the mother board capacity is 4G) and replaced the original hard drive with an SSD (256G, Crucial brand). I improved it's original wifi adapter with wifi plug, and gave it bluetooth capability also with a plug. I loaded windows 11 on this unsupported hardware, and it gets updates and features and works fine. I'm amazed that it actually usable in this day and age (this one was built and sold in 2007!). I used O&OShutUp to debloat it, worked good enough for me. 40 second startup, 6 second shutdown. Not as quick as my newer machines of course ( get about 800mb from ISP at router), but it's pretty snappy considering it's age! Your videos are always informative and and great learning tools, ..keep up the good work!

I have a 7 year old Levono ThinkCenter - i5/5series X4. I checked the specs from the company, haha, so many pages to read/PDF. I did come across That there is a 3 or 3.5 inch slot for a SSD. Considering the connection type - would this mean I would end up with a vintage SSD and perhaps not worth swapping out? I have been a casual PC used since 90/91 and online since 05. As such I have near zero education on hardware. Various software I am ok with though. Many Thanks for your Channel. Might as well add that after a Chrome Update several months ago or perhaps an KZitem Update, I found that while in KZitem and I clicked on a title in either my - Watch later, it would pop up fast, then hang and stutter badly for 8 - 9 seconds. Going through 10 Pro Task Manager and then Details - I reset Chromed Priority on most exe. files and bingo this fixed the 2 issues, even though they reset themselves. Thought some viewers might want to know this as I spent hours asking all over Chrome, KZitem and the Net.

Regretfully, your video title is for OLD computer and you demonstrate with a CPU of base speed 3.9 GHz and 32 GB of RAM using Windows 11? Perhaps this is not the best way to explain your approach. As for older motherboards, you cannot remove a core duo CPU from 2008 and simply put in an i5 or i7 due to socket changes and bios updates. I'm typing this on an HP DV7 1000 series with CPU P8400 running at 2.26 base clock which has no turbo capability and the laptop is limited to 4 GB. So with Windows 10, it is slow when compared to any i5, but still works ok to play video @720p. But the Sata SSD still allows reasonable response times. But this has better speakers than any other laptop I have used recently with exception of the Acer 17 inch media laptop from about 2008? Still, I wish to say thank you for your efforts on all these videos - still a pleasure to review.
