I'm having a bear of a time trying to find a piece of wood the correct width. 1/2 and 3/4 thicknesses are easy to find. But all I can find at 2" and 3" widths, which actually comes out to 1.5" or 2.5". I need 2" for a neck pocket. I've been to multiple stores now with no luck. I don't have a table saw so I don't have a way to rip it to the correct width. Any suggestions on where to locate an appropriate board?

Sometimes the folks at where you buy your lumber will cut it for you, especially the smaller companies. I have cut with a fine tooth Japanese saw, but it takes time. I finally invested into a small Ryobi 9" ban saw and that has done well for cutting jobs like this, including making jigs and altering headstocks. If you go that route, be sure to go online and learn how to set up and adjust a ban saw. It made a huge difference than using it out of the box. Thanks for watching and best wishes for your guitar builds and mods!

Thank you KiloTon and thanks for watching. It might be basic for experienced builders, but I had to research and go through a learning curve before I came up with something that worked well for me.. I hope it helps.

Steven, newbie question. My apologies. If you have a glue in neck, how would you alter this process?

All questions are good Stephen. There's a lot to learn. I do it the same way and I think I used this same stick for an LP build. The small screw holes in the body aren't a problem. The pocket needs to be flat, sand if necessary around the holes. This is the StewMac LP build I'm referring to, which is glue in neck: kzitem.info/news/bejne/lWqZ3WGHo5lziIY

Do you make a new handle for each guitar you build? Screw holes and neck-pocket width are fairly standard within bolt-on necks aren't they? Thanks.

Fender style guitars are fairly standard. This will work for glue on necks as well, because no one well see the holes and I can fill in. I often work on two guitars at the same time, so it's nice to have 2-3 ready. Thanks for watching Brian!
