My miniature paintings also tell a story. For example they tell about my struggle with wet blending or how even after years I cannot realistically paint hair... Or the story my objective counters tell how I painted them perfectly and then had an accident with an 'exploding' bottle of white that left its spots on those models...

Just finished my krieg kill team thematically modeled after the Italian Arditi from WWI (“To whom is reserved the glory and the joy of daring the impossible? To us! We either win, or die trying.”) I mean, they don’t look like actual historical arditi, but I had that in my head while I painted anyway. Lava bases with a cool red OSL on the bottom surfaces. Compared to the last few models I painted that were essentially just “practice new techniques,” these were easier and more fun for sure

Trying to tell a story is something I definitely enjoy. I, too, am a lover of the grunge and my Frostgrave merc band reflects this. They look like they've been on the road. But... Like the UA said, not every story warrants that. Even within my company, I found myself thinking about whether a certain amount of grunge *made sense*. For example, the floppily-dressed dude? I went all out on the dirt and fading - so he looks more far from home and fish-out-of-water. He wouldn't be there if he had a choice, and I tried to reflect that. Alternately, most of my mercs have stained - if otherwise clean - blades to reflect the idea that they've been fighting but normally keep their weapons in good condition. The company's thugs (aka the low-level vagabond dudes)? Different story! They aren't professional soldiers, probably half their equipment, and don't know how to care for it. So I decided to rust their weapons up; something that wouldn't have made sense for the others. ...Now if I could just get good enough to tell stories *other* than "dirt here, rust there"
@Bluecho4
3 жыл бұрын
With Frostgrave, I understand that the official kits from Osprey come with a lot of non-weapon pieces of equipment. Like lamps or the like. These kinds of items might tell stories about that mercenary. One idea for telling a story with paint might be to do a couple mercenaries in the colors of a specific army (that you make up). So it seems like they were deserters or veterans of a military campaign that never bothered to change. (Perhaps for a few of them, the uniform is the only set of clothing they own).
@Sturmensky
3 жыл бұрын
@@Bluecho4 I can 100% get behind this. I recently did several of my mercenaries (and one 20 year old pewter GW Bretonian sculpt) in red and white so they form a "unit." The others are any colour you can think of! I also just began something not-quite-but-similar with my Demons box. The two human-footed torsos will be used for human knight converts, but the other eight will be divided into two "warbands" of 4. One will be a more traditional unmodified team, using blacks, reds, and some wet blood effects, so they look like a warband. The others 4 will also be made to look like a warband - albeit kitbashed into a flesh/clockwork hybrid. Good for either monsters or unscrupulous wizards!

Agreed on how once the non chaos unit essentially brings the tank on the transportation vehicle that there's going to be some poor trooper who gets to clean it before the next war. One thing I like with vehicles or things on large bases to pick some stuff from one corner of the bits box to tell the backstory of the mini. For my admech vehicle, I put some necron weapons on the base to put that historical grudge in that vehicle's history.

I love dust tactics, yes i still call it that because its the rulebook i have back from that kickstarter fiasco. Sadly the whole gamesystem died out at least here in switzerland, most people i knew that where into the kickstarter abandoned the game because some never got their models, and for the others, you cant reasonably source the game here due to shipping and custom fees (no we arent in the EU thus no free shipping from EU resellers) ... so im sitting here on a lot of painted models (had lots of fun with painting them) with a system i loved but can now only play against myself - yay.... sorry for that rant, had to get it out of my system.... here have a beer - pachow

I try to paint my Hallowheart army in their finest, shiny swords and polished helms, because I reckon most of the time they are going to war to defend their countryside. They parade out of the city in orderly regiments to lay low the enemies of Sigmar. My Nighthaunt, on the other hand, are spirits who just picked up their swords after some hundred years, so those things are grimy as heck if not turning into part of the ghost.

The story my paint tells is of a guy, who in the mid to late 90s started out painting 40k miniatures, but due to lack of funds, no peer group in the hobby around him, and lack of tuition never really amounted to much, now in his 40s he's still stuck in the 90s, with just about as much funding but with degraded eyesight! Not sure about telling a story, mine is more an attempt to recreate how I think the mini would look entering into combat, so Death Guard are very grimy, Space Marines shiny as with Necrons, living metal and all that. Add some weathering and that's our painting, preferably quick as painting is not my favourite part of the hobby.

@@bocatt9202 yes and no, if you want to depict an inbattle army sure. But i mean if i can hobby wax my car and drive on a dirt road and then just water hose it completely clean 2021, then 38k years in the future, they should/would have some better tech for that. Besides having old wear and tear-scratches all over dosn't make that much sense, imo. Doing MS, everything was kept as clean as possible inbetween deployments. With my limited knowlede about W40k, spacemarines dosn't really seem to do longer wars either, they're more like the guys called in to win battles, or to end the war. Imperial Guards thing however seem to do the month/year long trench warfares ww1-2 style and with bad equipment, or atleast way worse than what the spacemarines get. Anyway, I like the clean paintjobs, but i always enjoy a well executed weathering job aswell, ngl.
