Very Cool, give me your website minus the .'s so I can check it out. I'm not certain about the switching, my HVAC contractor provided that. I believe it's a pressure switch that senses the pressure change in the outflow duct and kicks on the motorized damper to allow outside make-up air to enter. Thanks for commenting. Matt

Good video idea, I'm finishing a house now with make up air, I'll shoot a video and get it up soon. Best, Matt Risinger

This may be a stupid question but here goes. What's preventing a person from simply installing a simple damper backward? It seems to me that the negative pressure in the home would open the flap contingent on the makeup air needed. The main reason I ask is, we have a high volume bathroom fan 300 cfm, As well as our range hood fan which draws 900 cfm.

Great videos. Im interested ins a system like that but my air ducts are rectangular not round. What would be the solution?

Hello, We are building a house and are experiencing this issue with the make up air. Does the make up air need to be heated before entering the home? We re connecting a 10inch duct with the damper you are using in your video and are attaching it to the return air in the heating system. Should we invest more money into a heating system? -thanks

We Offer a Very Similar Return Damper With Our Make Up Air Kit. But What Assembly Switch Did You Install in the Range Hood Ductwork ? Did You Use Pressure Based Switch or An Airflow Switch ?

Isn’t required by code the make up air to be heated to 68 F? Bringing cold air at winter will cause condensation at the stove.

This important topic is rarely addressed. I realize you have limited time but you may want to cover some of the specific, life threatening reasons that make up air is so important and - and should not depend on someone remembering to open a window each time the hood dan get turned on. Also, I know you are in Austin, TX, but it would be great to see you cover methods of recovering heat before it gets vented - to counter the (cold) make up air. Well done.

What should it cost for a contractor to add a make up air unit?

The typical 5-burner range needs a maximum of 500 cfm. Use an EC-controlled motor outside for a variable flow rate (e.g. one burner may only need 100 cfm, etc.). Install a MERV 13 filter unit on that supply duct underneath in a place you can easily access to change the filter. Think about any potential condensation problems in both the winter (outside of the duct) or summer (caused by warm moisture on the inside of the duct). You could add an HRV for 900 cfm but that is expensive considering the range vent hood may only be used 1 hour a day.

Have you found a solution to filter and condition this make up air?

Chris Hopkins Chris, many jurisdictions are disallowing this passive style “makeup air”. Because it’s not makeup air. It’s relief air. The reasons are extensive and first on the list is depressurization is the only way they work. The reason for makeup air is so you don’t depressurize the home. See the problem? In commercial kitchens, there is a fan forced makeup air to equalize the pressure. If you have a fan pulling air out, it would stand to reason that the only way air comes in is one of two ways...1.) depressurize the space ( exactly what we are trying to prevent). 2.) force an equal amount of air back in (this is ACTUALLY making up the air being displaced by the pseudo commercial exhaust. Hence the term makeup air. ) and yes, there are a number of inline heaters available to pre-condition that air coming in. A few companies make an active system but only one system modulates exactly with any multi speed hood system on the market. It’s made by Fantech. www.fantech.net/products/fans--accessories/circular-duct-fans/ecm-fans-for-circular-ducts/mua/muas-1200-makeup-air-system/. It also has an optional heater sold separately. Full disclosure I work for them and have traveled the country talking with builders who did it the passive way only to be called back by their very irate homeowners when their hood didn’t function properly. Some code officials allow it but it’s not makeup air.

Well, I sure wish I could find one person who could provide a solution for an island Wolfe pro range for a Texas house. No space under the stove. I’m on a slab as most Texas homes

Broan and "Best" range hoods both offer make up air damper solutions. The reason for the make up air is to prevent backdrafting of things like hot water heaters and furnaces where carbon monoxide can be drawn back in from a negative air pressure inside the home. Nice video, the codes are spreading and this is important information.

Too bad I cannot afford a fancy air make up system like yours. I guess I’ll start opening my nearest window to my range for optimum performance. All though logic tells me I have a lot of make up air from 4 6” bathroom exhaust fans with 6” ducting through my house. Sure there is two back draft dampers per fan (one at the fan, second one at roof cap), however, I can see that when my house get depressurized they then become intakes. Additional intaking also comes from micro intakes which even the most sealed houses have. Then again my fan is only 250- CFM. :0( I do wonder if a 400 -500 CFM would not be more than enough for even a real chef. Your over the range fan is almost 1000 CMF?!?! 😳 Also about that “curtain of air” you talk about... humm. Bon apettit eating those particles. Just kidding... all of us eat millions of extra food particles every day.

+David Gutiérrez very true. Those fans are certainly backdrafting
