Makhdoom Sahib in Srinagar is one of the most prominent Sufi shrines of Kashmir which is final resting place of famous Sufi mystic Sheikh Hamza Makhdoom RA (AD 1494 - 1576). Popularly known as Mehboob-ul-Alam, Sultan-ul-Aarifeen, Shahehshah E Kashmir Sheikh Hamza RA was born in a village Tujr Sharif, a village of Zainagar in Sopore in Raina family. His father’s name was His father's name was Hazrat Baba Usman Raina. Sheikh Hamza received his education in Sopore and Srinagar by his teachers Fatehullah and Sheikh Ismail Kabroi he was a strict practicing Muslim and has a special place and impact on the lives of Kashmiris. Devotees from all over the Kashmir regularly visit his Shrine which is situated at southern slopes of Koh e Maran or Hari Parbat in Srinagar city.
Srinagar, city, is the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir northern India, situated in the Kashmir region of the Indian subcontinent. The city lies along the banks of the Jhelum River at an elevation of 5,200 feet (1,600 metres) in the Valley of Kashmir. It is most densely populated area of the state and is situated amid clear lakes and lofty forested mountains, Srinagar has long had a considerable tourist economy. Along its course through the city, the Jhelum River is spanned by several wooden bridges, and numerous adjacent canals and waterways abound with shikara.
One of the most famous disciples of Makhdom Sahib is Baba Daud Khaqi RA who has written hundreds of poems in honour of his sufi mentor and spiritual guide Sheikh Hamza Makhdom. The Shrine can be approached from rainawari Side passing through Kathi Darwaza by climbing about 127 steps and also from downtown Srinagar Hawal side near Sangeen darwaza.
Beautiful Moughal era mosque known as Akhun Mulla Shah Mosque is also situated between Kathi darvaza and shrine. Akhund Mullah Shah Masjid or Akhoon Mullah Masjid or Dara Shikoh Masjid, known as Mala Shah Mashid in Kashmiri, is a mosque built by Dara Shikoh in 1649 for his spiritual mentor. Located in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India, it is a mosque inside a mosque. The prime sanctuary is entirely separated from the main building through a courtyard that surrounds it. There is a stone lotus that crowns the podium of the mosque.
One was have a beautiful view of Srinagar city from Makhdom sahib shrine. Every year, the annual Urs is observed during the Safar month, according to the Islamic calendar. The 13-day celebration in the month of “Safar” starts on the 11th and ends on the 24th.
