Zip lining, mountain climbing at the Philippines highest mountain-the Mt. Apo, or taking a weekend jaunt along with love ones in an unspoiled tourist attractions are just one of the things you’ll love about Makilala-the Gateway to Central Mindanao.
Abundant in natural resources, the Municipality of Makilala is located at the foot of Mt. Apo along Davao-Cotabato highway. It has a land area of approximately 34,356 hectares. It is just 129 kilometers away from Davao City-the center of trade, industry, and education in Mindanao, Philippines. Makilala population is about 80,000 (Christians, Muslims, and Indigenous) people.
Due to its rich natural resources and cool climate, Makilala is more suited to agricultural production. Dole-Stanfilco and a number of rubber processing companies are the major firms operating in the area.
Makilala is also known for its unique attractions. One of them is the New Israel- known for the Moncadist sect and the tamed monkeys in their community. For those who love ziplining, New Israel is one of the places to visit. Here you can find one of the longest zip line adventures in Asia (1 km for the first line and 1.3 km for the second line). This mountain village is also one of the preferred routes by mountain climbers going to the country’s highest peak-the Mt. Apo.
The Le Reve resort is among the favorite destinations by local tourists in Makilala due to its non-chlorinated spring water piped from the foothills of the majestic mountain.
While the municipality is blessed with natural resources, it faces a lot of challenges to boost its economy. The process needs time, budget, hard work and dedication of its leaders. Mayor Rudy Caoagdan created the Makilala Rural and Urban Development Initiatives (MAKI-RUDI) Program aimed at responding to the needs of the people. This program focuses on free college education, social and economic assistance to the residents of Makilala.
