It looks perfect. My first thought seeing the incredibly posh suit completed, was professional funeral director Martisha Addams! May I ask? The buttons, are they vintage? Possibly lucite or bakelite? Also, the weight of the waistband interfacing, which do you prefer? *I completely follow along your videos. I learn so much from your knowledge and skills. Thank you.

Here is my tip for pre-washing - i put the fabric folded in pillow case / cushion cover and wash it inside of it. most times the fabric wont unfold and i don't have to face ripped pieces. PS. i only use one pillow case, already checked, not bleeding colors (you can use white too), so i am not worried about color change.

Took me a day or so, to get through, but so worth it! Thank you, for taking the time to share your process for drafting and constructing a jacket. I find your way of filming and editing this much more useful than the fast paced, overedited videos one usually sees with tutorials. HILARIOUS. I laughed the whole way, always love your sharp wit. Also, kudos on an excellently filmed and edited video, what a fantastic resource for the suit I’ve been dying to try! Thank you for dedicating so much care and time to it. Thank you SO. VERY. MUCH. for leaving in the rant about clipping rounded seams and leaving raw edges. It’s something that’s always confused me, and I haven’t tried it out of terror of unraveling. The information you provided was *exactly* what I needed to understand how it works, and it was so helpful to know you haven’t experienced any damage on your cotton twills (though I suspect linens and silks might be a different story). Also, every sewing room is messy! It’s part of the creative process, but I definitely wouldn’t be offended if you made a Clean With Me video where you sorted, cleaned, and organised your sewing room! It’s always fun to peek at what processes and tools other people incorporate into their art. Which reminds me: you mentioned you usually press with steam and your hand... have you considered a pressing block or tailor’s clapper? I’ve used them a couple times and absolutely love the sharp edges it gives me. Plus, my main career is massage therapy, so it saves my hands from burns so I can work the next day!
@TheClosetHistorian
5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Beatrice! I need more pressing tools it's true! I just have my little tailors ham. As for burns, at my day job I have to use a 350 degree heat press and am constantly burning myself (clumsy by nature), so I am quite used to it eek! I refuse to slow down so I get little burns all the time I'm afraid, not the best.

Hi Bianca, Loved the finished view: wig, scarf, spider brooch and all. I’ve been sewing for 63 years ( I know!! - still learning) and have always sewn over my pins - can’t see why this may be an issue. Once sewing was a cheaper way to have nice clothes. Now it’s a way to have better quality fabrics and perfect fit. I like the whole process from choosing the fabric, drafting, machining and finishing by hand. Thank you for sharing your expertise just love your content.

Also, I had changed my name on here a while back from Boss Darcie to Goth Empress because I changed my gamer handle and so switched almost all my social medias too. It's still me! Still Darcie, your neighborhood spoop! ^_^ I watch all of your videos, even if I don't always comment on them.

if you ever need a haloweenvideo idea you should do a vintage cleopatra costume, the makeup reminded me of how cleopatra looked in old movies. The way I was taught to make princess seams is to close all that darts creating a 3d object, then drawing the curve and cutting the pieces, making sure to have a cutting line runing through the nipple mark.

Maybe you are interested in making a historical 40s hiking outfit? A tartan fitted vest and a woolen or heavy cotton hiking skirt? Since you are also into vintage traveler fashion i think it could be a cool thing.

I really wanted to make jodhpurs this year, for a full fall adventure ensemble indeed, but I don't think I'll have the budget for fabric for them this year, sometime though! I do have plaids in my stash though, and do have a vest on my to do list!

you sewed over about a gajillion pins, if I sewed over only one pin, I would have a broken needle. and the needle tip probably protruding from my eye. Love your tutorial, thank you so much. Love from Australia. xx

Hi, Lovely to see you again. As always I can't use anything you were doing in the video myself, but I had a good time again, as always. Last week as I was rambling around Etsy I saw a beautiful evening dress from the 1920's. Very drapey and sparkly, and I thought about you. I think you mentioned at some point that you would like to do an evening dress. Your eye makeup especially in the opening presentation is gorgeous and I would love to se how you did it. I'm already looking forward to the next visit with you. Yours, Ann

@@TheClosetHistorian Hi, that's to bad. I would have loved to see it. Talking about Etsty. I have been walking around the shops today, and I saw a pair of vintage cotton blend gloves from the 40's or 50's, Did they do blends like that at that time? How does one know if what the vendor say's is right. I also found a pair of 40's to 50's shoes in a different shop and they looked similar to the ones that I've seen in American Duchess but with higher and slimmer heals. How could I learn to see the difference between the real deal and being a reproduction or a case of the early 80's doing that era? If you run out of Ideas maybe you could give us a tutorial at some point. With my Best Nightly Regards. Yours, Ann P.S What is your Etsy store's name. Maybe I'll see something I like there, or at least it will be fun to window shop D.S

Love the details and watching your thought process as you worked thru your ideas. I’d love to see a winter sweater suit or a wool suit like your blue and green plaid suit. I love the sweater suits they wear in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. I think you would look great in those, then I could copy your patternmaking.

Love the look. Especially styled with the pin and scarf.Thank you for all the detail and sharing the thought process behind your designing. Just a thought...maybe skip a step/save some time by chalking on outline of pencil skirt block if you've not made pattern alterations. Looking forward to your how-to for a custom pencil skirt block.

Thank you Michele! Alas my card versions of my pencil skirt pattern are too short, only 27" long and I prefer my skirts 28-30" long, so I made a dot paper version so I could add on that extra length. The poster board I use for the card patterns is only 27" long so I need to Frankenstein some more onto the ends!

Lots of comments, so don't know if you'll see this... but the reason it has you move the end of the dart has to do with fit and ease. If you pivot without extending the dart, it will reduce ease on the side of the bust, and open up the "beak" looking part too much, adding fullness to the seam that goes over the front of bust - also making it harder to ease in the side front to the center front pattern pieces along the princess seam when sewing. Most of those random things are done for fit and ease, but they don't usually explain in the books! Anyways, I love your channel! I studied fashion design too 🙃. Your channel gives me inspiration to start new projects (as if I need to start new projects 🤣). You have such cute ideas! Thank you!!

Love the end result!! I'm all for the goth secretary vibes for sure. I want to add this to my list to make now! I'm so glad you're going to continue making sewing videos and I'm so excited for fall!! I know it wouldn't be difficult to do, but I would love to see video on how you would alter this pattern for a vest. that would work for a fall sewing project I think! Also, I've been making various attempts at making the perfect 1940's wide leg trouser and I feel it would help me immensely if you could work through it and show how you draft it and what type of fabric you make it out of. It's also a classic staple kind of piece that would go with a lot of things in your closet I think! A few other ideas if you think they could work for your style: - long sleeve 40's dress. maybe some color-blocking? - 40's jumper dress that you layer over long sleeves - a bolero suit with long sleeves like vintage simplicity 1741 - plaid shirtwaist style dress - MAYBE A COAT?? or save that for winter lol - not sure its your style, but a cropped 40's jacket like the house of foxy Americana jacket ALSO since Halloween is coming up, it would be cool to see a video with some costumes with a vintage twist! Either like a vintage twist on a non-vintage type thing or some classic vintage looks that are iconic Sorry for writing so much, I really can't stop lol

The reason for the adjustments around the bust on the front side pattern piece is to soften the shape of the bust point. This aligns with modern bra shapes. If you wanted a more 50s bullet bust you wouldn't do those adjustments.
