I love your banjos, man. and thanks for the recommendation. Buffalo Kin sound awesome. Please follow your gut on getting a respirator mask. Your lungs and by extension your entire body will thank you in 50 years time. My grandpa was the only one in his crew of 6 who survived past his 60s because he endured all the others laughing at him wearing a mask when they tearing down houses and huts built with glass fibre and asbestos.

Great video! Those thermal camera shots with the saw were super cool! And the banjo looks awesome, of course.

If I bought a gourd banjo this would be what I want it to be like 😊 love the low low

thanks! yeah I wish it was easier to get gourds like this out here, I got real lucky with this one. I've been experimenting with getting these types of low tones from smaller gourds but it's not quite the same

That's a lovely instrument! I have one made from a larger gourd like that, and I keep it tuned low as well--mine is not quite as big of a gourd, though! That thing rocks. Love the plunk and rumble to it. I am thinking about trying a different bridge than the one I have, as I've heard good things about the 2-foot bridges as you use, but have not tried that.

thanks! yeah the two footed bridge seems to bring out the best tone. Basically you want to limit the amount of contact area between the bridge feet and the head, but you can't go too crazy with these skin heads bc it can jab into the head if the feet are too small

You should get a 3m respirator or an old surplus gas mask (just change the filters if it’s an old Soviet one as the original filters contain asbestos)

Hey Ben, quick question - I've picked up a handmade tackhead minstrel-style banjo recently, made from random driftwood. Overall a pretty nice build, though I had to commission a massive 1-inch bridge for it, due to the height of the fretboard and the sag of the skin. I've noticed that even if I tune low (open-G relative c g c e g) that the bridge pushes a decent way into the drum skin, do you think there's any risk of damage? I'd like to tune up to open-g relative d a d f# a but I'm worried about piercing the skin or something. Also, what do you usually tune your gourd banjos up to? I've had a hard time figuring out what relative tuning people tend to use on older tackheads/gourds and I'm worried of pushing it too high. Also, nice banjo! It reminds me of the massive gourd banjo Lowly Mountain Banjos made (you can see it in his 'glory bound' video). Love the tone, its exactly the type of gourd banjo I want to get one day.

is the coffee water still warm when youre soaking the hide? great vids!

yeah, I don't measure the exact temperature, I like to get it pretty warm though. But if it's too hot to hold your hand under the water without it hurting at all it's too hot and can damage the skin. So I like to go just below that on temp
