I did a video not too long ago with using a single 1/2 inch chisel and a strap. I walked into the woods and cut a tree down and turned it into a stool using just those two items in the middle of the woods. It is actually easier to cut when the wood is wet you just have to know that it will distort and bend and no longer be perfectly round once it thoroughly dries. If you wait until it's fully dried then you can cut it and it will maintain its shape.

What a fantastic challenge to set yourself! I am curious why you chose to do most of your chiselling in the vise instead of on the bench with a holdfast? A few times in the video you can see the workpiece slipping in the vise which wouldn't happen on the bench top.
@WoodByWright
6 жыл бұрын
the problem with the holdfast is there was almost no time when there was a flat side on it that I could clamp it with he hold fast. most of the time I let it slide down to the screw so the screw would stop it from sliding further.

I'm using wood pallets (because free) and Everytime I get close to the edge the wood just breaks apart. Like I want to make a gun wall rack, so image a fish hook but holds the base of the gun. The wood would break in the middle or when I try flattening it hammering twords the edge also breaks it. I know you need to make a sharp chisel and believe me I'm using sand paper all the way up to 1,500 grit. And it doesn't seem to do enough because breaking chunks of the wood off.
@WoodByWright
4 жыл бұрын
They have 1,500 on sandpaper isn't going to get it that sharp. You may want to move on to using a strop with chrome oxide after that. and in the end sharpness has more to do with technique than it does with the grit you use. usually the reason things break off is the chisel is not sharp enough and you're trying to take too big of a bite. on the inside's the box here I was just shaving off a few thousands with each stroke of the chisel.
