Looks awesome, I want to make something similar for my game, in a similar retro style. Any chance of you open sourcing this?

nice tutorial, this helps a lot to stimulate more creativity for each one to have their own OS

Thanks! I'm sure it'll go through multiple redesigns before I'm finished!

Tried making a 2000's themed OS for a game a while back, but I didn't think to use Polymorphism. Thanks for the tip! PS. Benthic Zone looks awesome!

I’m a big fan of it! In all honesty, I probably use polymorphism an unnecessary amount haha. Thanks!

Looks cool! Slowing down the video I can see that the water is moving pretty weirdly, rather than moving directly top right, it seems its moving to the right one step and to top one step. Is this effect intended?

Basically, the whole mesh is flexing and then the texture is 4 layered textures scrolling at different speeds. They’re all traveling in the same direction though. I’m not sure I understand what you mean by right one step and to the top one step

Now... what about being able to move the desktop icons around and have them just sit there when you let go of them, oooor what about if you were to select and drag to select multiple files? Because I can think of multiple reasons not to use VBox and HBox containers for that case. Btw I love the look of your game!

While that functionality isn’t in it yet, because it’s an array with a set number of icons (including blank placeholder icons) I would just switch the location of two nodes’ in the SceneTree. Basically, when you click down, create a half opacity image of the icon you clicked, and attach it to the mouse. Store it’s number. Then, when you let go, just check if it’s on a placeholder cell or not. If it is, switch their locations. If not, just go back to the previous state. Anyway, I’m not sure how clear that was, but that’s how I would implement it right now, but it’s always possible I find a better way somewhere down the line. I’m sure whatever I end up doing will end up in a video eventually

I just drew them. It’s a simple texture that tiles across the background. I think it was 64x64
