Still one of my favorite turners! And still my favorite bowl finish. Hope all is well, Mike. Joseph Muench

It's a very nice piece, but after you got it off the lathe, you do an awful lot of sanding instead of using a carving knife. You wouldn't sand that much on a lathe.

Belo exemplo de bom aproveitamento da madeira, para fazer 1 bowl vai ter que derrubar duas árvores!! A beautiful example of the good use of wood, to make 1 bowl you will need to cut down two trees !!

Hi Mike, I bought he QSWO platter at the TAW this year. I see you have a Laguna in your workshop. As a frequent hobby turner, is the Laguna 2436 a good machine. My other choices are the 3520C or maybe even the VL300. I turn the usual gamut of bowls (some cored), pens, gift items, platters, etc

It's a lot of wood wasted for a small cup you could have made a bowl out of it instead

Hi Mike. What is the initial dimension you use to scribe your first circle? The cardboard template you cut out is 3.5” to define the outside rim so I’m curious to know what the ID of the mug is? Thank you

I know it would be off-balance, but couldn't you make that out of a 3"x4"x7" blank?
@andreachinaglia5804
4 жыл бұрын
it is possible, you have probably to counter balance the piece somehow, the lathe is anyway used only to core out the internal part of the bowl. mr Mahoney is a well known turner that sell his pieces for a high price, that cup costs 150 dollars, from what i read in other comments. and i am not saying that it is overpriced, there is much more work then to turn a bowl, and being mr Mahoney is different from being mr Nobody. but the price of the wasted wood, wood that probably Mahoney season himself starting from green logs, is not relevant in the equation, so he chooses to don't do it. Probably working with really expensive wood he would have tried to minimize the waste.

Just curious: how many coats of oil do you put on to keep it from cracking/splitting? I've made some drinking cups, usually out of spindle-oriented cherry, but they seem to split very easily when filled with liquids, especially hot.
@spikerocket182

Because you turned it out of end grain. You need to sever the growth rings so they don’t crack. That’s why you turn bowls in the traditional orientation.

Soviel schönes Holz vergeuden für ein Becherchen. Wahrscheinlich fällt er auch Ben ganzen Baum für einen Zahnstocher...
