That's great! I've used my Mora 3" Carving knife to open the hole a bit but this video was super helpful.

Can you show the actual process of adding and removing material to and from exact point along the bore? I'm interested in learning how to do this. Also is there a reason you referred to the all of the notes in sharps except for the F-natural? (The more normal way to write this scale in Western music would be in flats so you get the F-natural instead of the E#.)

I noticed the angle of the utaguchi is really "flat" in this flute, while in other instruments it seems to be steeper, what difference does it make?

How do you know where to put the Ji in order to stabilize the notes? Is there some kind of general formula for that? :)

Could you please send me all of the measurements of the total length of the flute and the distance from the root end to each hole and the tuning hole please. I’m 65 and disabled and would love to try and build one before God calls me home. Thanks brother 🙏

Yay you, so grab a glass beer 'stubbie', (Tooheys New works for me), fill it to the shoulders with water, or drink down to that if actual beer, and blow softly across the top like cooling a tiny burn on the tip of your finger, that you got putting out a candle. Soft and well directed, right over the top across the far edge, and find resonance. I can get at least an octave by bending the air and trash flute is now my favourite flute. Have a go. However, my recycled PVC electrical conduit flutes kick musical ass. Like this: kzitem.info/news/bejne/jp-omIaMjH6LmZg 25mm electrical conduit has a thick wall. Cut and sand mouthpieces until you find one you like, get a joiner and stick tubes with holes on that and viola, or rather, flute! You don't have to be particular about tuning if you can bend notes, hence the beer bottle practice. Flute in the video is 54cm long (D) with cm-wide holes, from the top, at 26, 32.7, 36.7 and 43.5 cms. There's a small thumb hole at 22.5 that you don't need, if you've been practicing on the beer. You could fiddle around with bamboo if you really wanted a bamboo flute, but expect disappointment. I have a beautiful bamboo flute better than I could ever make and I never play it. I reach for the PVC every time, and always have a few on hand to give away. Have fun with that!
