The one thing I love the most about this video is when you realized you needed to undo the stitches for the rain covers, you just did it. No hesitation on if it would get messed up or try to work around it, you just went all in and THAT is the awesome part. I think I lot of people would look at it and say "I already did that stitching, so it's done and I'm not touching it. I think being able to pull stuff apart, especially stuff you are creating, is the key to customization and truly wonderful works. Nice design!

Thank you so much for this video. I have a waxed canvas backpack that I have taken with me around the world traveling. It has seen a lot and been through a lot and is on its last leg of life. I already have leather I purchased to recreate this same bag but have lacked the courage to jump in and start this project. I believe I’ve just found the best video for me to attempt this pride to. Thank you so much 😊

Wow! One of the most inspirational pieces ever. It's wonderful to look at but you strike such a special chord when you mention keeping this bag for many years, using patches to mark new adventures. THAT is a life lived well! I am glad we live in a time when someone like you can share these types of things. This project moved me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've never seen Tandy sponsor anyone. Perhaps this explains why all of their ideas are outdated and far from fresh, new or inspiring. This would be a good start.

I just got into leatherworking myself, though I still need to pick up some more stuff for stitching; I decided to start off carving, stamping and tooling to get practice with those before moving on to constructing/stitching, so seeing this was really an inspiration. Honestly, I'm not sure if you really could find a leather bag like that for sale as something other than a custom order, and the fact that you made your own means that it will always be unique because it contains aesthetic and functional choices that reflect you, your personality and your creativity. Many years back, when talking to my father about something else, I got what I consider to be the best piece of advice pertaining to crafting; almost all projects start off simple, but very few remain that way for long. I've really taken that to heart and just accepted that even if what I was originally shooting for was something simple, I just have to go in whatever direction the project wants to take and trust that it will all turn out all right in the end.

I hear you about the patches; when you have an item like this that has been added to over time, it gives it that "well traveled" feel, especially if some of the patches are a touch dirty and some are cleaner, showing which ones have been there longer and which ones are more recent.
@ScorpionRegent
5 жыл бұрын
Oregon has it's fair share of rain. I would have treated the leather with some sort of oil/wax waterproofing to avoid saturation if you are caught in heavy weather. Once the patches are on it's too late. It possible to Scotchgard the patches after the fact, but what's underneath is untreated. Don't get me wrong I like patches too. I sewed on a large loop panel onto my canvas bag so I could add lots of velcro backed patches and swap them out as I choose. It's true you can have a lot of patches, but I find all at once is overwhelming. One day I might make a leather back pack like yours. It's really nice to know it's truly yours on a level that money and market can't touch. There are a lot of such things for sale on Etsy, and you're right they cost a lot. Thanks for the video.
