I was given some pieces of engineered joist to see what I could make of it on the lathe. the one thing that came to mind over and over was to make a sturdy mallet so I could smack my live center into a piece of wood. I didn't want to use walnut, maple, or another nice species because I'm just going to be hitting metal with it. as it turns out (pun intended) what I thought was a spindle turning was really more like a bowl turning.
safety note: I live in a cold climate and need gloves. even if it was summer here I'd still use gloves for some things because wood chips can cut and the steam can burn. I take responsibility for my safety and you need to take responsibility for your own safety. if you see me doing something you wouldn't feel comfortable doing them don't do it! I want all of us to come back to the shop again tomorrow, safe and sound!
