In part two of making a Matten Filter, we drill some holes and assemble the air stone inside the PVC pipe. I used a 12mm barbed poly fitting to step it down further and cause a better outwards flow.
You don't need to glue any of this together - all of the PVC fittings press together! Then I thread in the poly barb - you can use that to connect a DIY spray bar or extender yourself.
I added some substrate to my tank and then cycled it and added fish in there as well. Because they were coming from heated tanks, I had to acclimate them to the ambient (cooler) 3 foot split tank. My Medaka, Kohaku Koi Swordtails and German Blue Rams were added and they have been thriving.
For plant filtration in the Matten filter, I have added guppy grass and I also planted a bunch of Java Moss at the bottom of the filter so that as fish waste collects there, it'll grow upwards and hopefully, eventually cover the entire filter!
More updates will follow on my Matten setup - I have some new tanks and a big fish rack coming to my fish room soon that will also be using Matten filtration.
Down the track when I get my fish retail shop open, I'll also be leaning heavily into Matten filters as well!
