I just bought one of these machines yesterday at a country auction. I think one of the stainless steel cups is a replacement but the rest is all original. Now I'm educating myself on how to use it, and your video is very informative. Thanks!

You're welcome. My machine didn't have any cups when I bought it. I found some nice originals on Ebay.

Great item! There are not many things made like this anymore. That is one machine built to last a very long time.

Agreed. Very solid and heavy. That's why all these antiques are still around.

If you think that cup is hot after washing it, you haven't taken one out of high temp commerciless dishwasher. Fortunately some of the stainless cup Shake Shack uses have a silicone sleeve on them.

I recently acquired an early 1930s Arnold Electric, jade green, #17 mixer (one speed) that's in great shape and works like a champ. Anyway, it's nice to not only see how to use one of these vintage milkshake mixers, but how to clean up after you're done. Thanks for sharing!

You’re welcome. You could add a little soap if you want. I just use hot water. I did a Google search to see what an Arnold looks like. It’s pretty cool. Looks older than the Hamilton Beach. I wonder who was the first one to make this design. They are both similar.

@@Chicagocoinop I do add a little dish washing soap along with hot water when cleaning the mixer shaft with the mixer stainless cup. I then follow up with plain water with then no water inside the cup to help air dry the spinning blades. I read somewhere recently that the Arnold Electric Co. of Racine, WI was taken over by Hamilton Beach sometime around 1931 which probably explains the similarity to that older Hamilton Beach mixer you saw via Google. My guess is Arnold was first with the design which Hamilton Beach continued for a while.

That’s a great price. I have no idea on what I paid. I bought it on Ebay years ago. Great machines. Just clean them or else some gunk might fall in your shake, lol.

@Chicagocoinop It was definitely a unicorn. All 3 motors fired up when I plugged it in. Normally I'd find them in the 350 range

You can just sense the big time power coming from that 1950s Hamilton Beach....are those types of units (or at least fairly similar) still being made and sold to commercial businesses (soda fountains, luncheonettes etc)..I'm assuming you cant purchase one for home use, and likely have to scout out vintage stock on ebay etc?

They do seem powerful, but my family never uses this. They prefer something like a Ninja. They work better. I believe Hamilton Beach made retro single spindle machines awhile back. I'd Google it. Otherwise, Ebay would be your best bet.

Thanks very much for responding and glad to see there is still interest in a video posted some 5 years ago:)...one thing I forgot to mention, is, I always very much liked the beautiful green color on these ;50s style Hamilton Beach...I know it sounds strange, but a malt/shake coming off one of these always seemed to taste better than a brushed steel color type! LOL...

I agree. I was going to buy a white machine but I held out until I found a decent Jade porcelain machine. Nothing says 1950 better than Jade green, lol.

Johnny, I think I have seen the type of machine you are referring to, (and I believe they have been around for a while), but I recall reading, that folks thought they were a poor imitation (not nearly powerful enough) of the original {1950s style) famous HB units....As a 66 yr old guy the thing that I love about this video, showing the large 3 shake HB, is it stirs up memories of the great malt shops of that 50s-60s era, because that is really where those powerful machines were used, to make 3 shakes at a time, during busy periods..as opposed to home use, where if someone spent the money to buy one...it was mostly always a single shake unit...

I've seen your video showing your restoration/repair of the 40DM. Do you ever make repairs for other people? I'm not sure I'm handy enough to do this on my own for the 40DM I just bought. All three motors work on all 3 speeds but the center motor sounds like it's laboring a little more and I'm sure it needs help. Would love to know if you "hire out"? Thanks! :)

I generally don't do repairs. The center motor is the one used the most so it will be the one whose parts get worn the fastest. It sounds like either your bearings are worn or your brushes are worn away, which is bad. You can either swap out the brushes from one of the less used side motors with the front motor, or just swap the two motors out, left to center, or right to center. This way your center motor would run fine. Odds are you will never use the side motors. I never made three shakes at once. Hamilton Beach doesn't have any replacement brushes, but you can find similar sizes through different vendors. I used McMaster Carr, but I don't recall what size they were. I filed them down and used a caliper to measure them. You don't have to be that precise and use a caliper. Just make sure they slide in and move freely. Get the ones with the spring and contact attached to the brush. You NEVER want to run the motor when the brushes are really low. Odds are the front motor brushes will need to be replaced. You can remove the brushes easily and compare the front motor brush to a side motor brush. I don't have the machine in front of me, but usually, there will be two screwed on caps that hold the brushes in the motor. Loosen the cap, and remove the brushes. They are spring loaded so be careful that you open slowly. Not a lot of force, just want you to be aware of that. When you pull them out they will be curved. Put them back in the same way. If you use new brushes, they will be flat at the end. You put them in, and run it on low to break them in. Once they break in and get curved, you can run them on hi.
